Garden like a Master will present a program on roses

The Master Gardeners of Kershaw County will present a program on "Everything you Need to Know about Growing Roses in South Carolina." The program is sponsored by the South Carolina Midlands Master Gardner Association "Garden Like A Master" (GLAM) series and contains useful information for the home gardener. This presentation will be the first of a series of monthly programs on various gardening topics that will be presented by Kershaw County Master Gardeners in various locations in Kershaw County.

The ‘Angel of Marye’s Heights’ remembered

A ceremony commemorating the heroic deed of the young confederate soldier Richard Kirkland was held Dec. 11, sponsored by the John D. Kennedy Chapter No. 308 United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Joseph B. Kershaw Camp No. 82 Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

CHS grad awarded scholarship

Auditions announced for Columbia City Ballet’s production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at FAC

Auditions for Columbia City Ballet's Production of "Sleeping Beauty" will be held in the dance studio on the campus of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County on Sunday, Jan. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. Performance will be Feb. 28 and March 1.

Kershaw County awarded federal funds for emergency food, shelter programs

Kershaw County has been chosen to receive $9,703 for 2011-12 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. Federal funding challenges have hit the most needy of the community at a time when it is needed most.

United Way of Kershaw County was awarded a $7,000 donation from Dr. Energy Saver Columbia after it won an Internet voting contest in December. Dr. Energy Saver Columbia, owned by William Cantey, is part of the home improvement industry.

Local veterans respect the flag through disposal

Members of American Legion Post 195, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8346 and AMVETS Post 33 recently joined together for an annual tradition: the disposal -- through burning -- of unserviceable American flags. The ceremony took place at VFW Post 8346's headquarters in Ridgeway, with all three posts participating in different parts of the ceremony.

Camden Lions Club installs new officers

The Camden Lions Club recently installed new officers and thanked the community for its support of club programs, having collected more than 1,300 pairs of used eye glasses. Boxes are located at the Food Lion shopping center in Lugoff, Rubin Eye Care Center in the K-Mart shopping center, the Walmart Vision Center, Belk and the Food Lion shopping center in Dusty Bend. The club supplied these glasses to local church groups for those in need in Honduras and Guatemela. Camden Lions have also assisted with eye operations and hearing aids for the needy. The karate kid

Lainey Williams, a rising third grader at Camden Elementary School (CES), recently competed in karate nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She is the national champion for kata (forms) and won bronze in kubodo (weapons) and kumite (sparring). This qualified her for Junior Olympics. She is the superregional champion in the 8-year-old female category for kubodo and won silver in kumite, and bronze in kata. She is also the North Carolina Champion in all three events.
