MHAKC presents special awards at annual membership meeting
Mental Health America of Kershaw County held its 48th annual membership dinner meeting, Nov. 11, in the fellowship center at First Baptist in Camden. The speaker was John Brown, a mental health specialist and an Episcopal priest who is a chaplain with Columbia Area Mental Health Clinic. He was introduced by Richard Guess, executive director of Santee-Wateree Community Mental Health Center in Sumter.
CFD presents firefighters with awards during Christmas party
In these photographs, the Camden Fire Department (CFD) awards its annual Chief Carl S. Hammond Career and Volunteer Firefighter awards during its Christmas party Dec. 10 at the Health Resource Center. Hammond's grandson, Jacob Hammond (left) and CFD Chief John Bowers (right) presented the awards. The recipient of the Career award was Engineer Skip Hannon and the Volunteer award to Chaplain Jimmy Atkerson. Hammond's late grandfather was a longtime Camden Fire Department chief.

Girl Scout Troop 968 presents Bronze Awards
Mary Kessler, Karma Furlow, and Kierra Addison, all from Girl Scout Troop No. 968, completed the requirements for the Girl Scout's Bronze Award. They now join the first seven to ever accomplish this award in Kershaw county.

Robert and Dianne McCaskill's home in Bethune has quickly become a tourist attraction in the small town after lighting their yard for Christmas. The two have been decorating their home for the past 35 years.
County students compete in Christmas Card Contest
The results of the Kershaw County Recreation Department annual Christmas Card Contest sponsored by First Palmetto Savings Bank are in. All schools participating were combined (by each grade), for the over-all cash prize winners. All winners and honorable mentions are on display at the First Palmetto Savings Bank on East DeKalb Street. These cards may be picked up at the Recreation Department office any time after Dec. 30. Former Camdenite wins ‘Best In Show’
Former Camdenite Manda McKay's painting "Love You To Death" won "Best In Show" at Southworks 2013. The Oconee County Arts Foundation (OCAF) hosted the opening reception April 12 in Watkinsville, Georgia. McKay grew up in Camden and graduated from Camden High School.
LeGrand Institute practices fire safety
Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. Local author publishes book about student success in the classroom
Books on Broad will host Jayne Bowers as she discusses and signs Eve's Sisters and Crossing the Bridge: Succeeding in a Community College and Beyond on Thursday, May 23, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Books on Broad is located at 944 Broad St. in Camden. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.
Elks Lodge recognizes 2013 Oustanding Young Students
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated the first week in May as Youth Week to honor America's Junior Citizens for their accomplishments.
Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
