Every year, the Camden Junior Welfare League (CJWL) collects gently used prom dresses and accessories for their annual Belle of the Ball, an event designed to provide dresses, shoes and accessories to girls who couldn't afford them otherwise.
Howden North America donates $3,800 to Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen
Howden, North America Inc., a world supplier of fans, rotary heat exchangers, compressors and gas handling equipment for the power generation petrochemical, steelmaking, mining and cement production industries, donated $3,847 to Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen.
FAC brings ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ to stage Thursday
Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" comes to life on the stage of the Wood Auditorium at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) Thursday at 8 p.m. "To Kill A Mockingbird" runs through Sunday. Shows are at 8 p.m. nightly; with the Sunday matinee set for 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and military. This production is sponsored by Powers Funeral Home.
Montessori School of Camden to host Winter Gala
The Montessori School of Camden will hold its annual Winter Gala and fundraising event at the Robert Mills Court House from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29. Kershaw County Library to increase material available to residents
This February will see big changes for library users in Kershaw County, when the county library joins South Carolina Libraries Sharing Resources, SC LENDS, a group of libraries that share a common catalog and library materials. By becoming a member of SC LENDS, anyone with a Kershaw County library card will be able to request material from 15 other libraries statewide, which will then be routed to a local library, usually within 48 hours. Brevard Music Scholarship Competition announced
The Camden Music Association, in conjunction with the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, announces the Brevard Music Scholarship Competition will be held Saturday, Feb. 5. With three different scholarship opportunities, winners will be awarded money toward further study or may spend the summer at the prestigious Brevard Summer Music Camp. The scholarships are funded by the Upton Foundation and the Fran Shealy Scholarship Fund.

Girl Scout cookies go on sale across the country
The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program, the $700 million, largest girl-led business in the country, is offering a new cookie and new packaging this year in South Carolina. Door-to-door sales began Jan. 14, and the dates for the sales at local retail locations are weekends from Feb. 25, through March 25. Prices remain unchanged from last year at $3.50 per box.
Happy 70th Anniversary!
Marion and Frankie Morgan of Camden celebrated their wedding anniversary on January 12th. They have three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The couple celebrated the milestone with family and friends at the Family Life Center, Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.

Former Camdenite Manda McKay's painting "Love You To Death" won "Best In Show" at Southworks 2013. The Oconee County Arts Foundation (OCAF) hosted the opening reception April 12 in Watkinsville, Georgia. McKay grew up in Camden and graduated from Camden High School.
LeGrand Institute practices fire safety
Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
