The Little Miss/Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant was held on Nov. 5 at Lyttleton Street Methodist Family Life Center. Food for the Soul receives holiday donation

Kershaw County equestrians and shoppers supported Kershaw County's Food for the Soul through a special Thanksgiving promotion offered by The Tack Room. A $5 donation earmarked for Food for the Soul earned shoppers a discount on purchases during the special promotion, said The Tack Room's John Cushman (left). The holiday drive raised $1,500 for the soup kitchen and recently opened emergency homeless shelter. Robert Ariail artwork raises money for FAC

Robert Ariail, popular political cartoonist, recently donated an original piece of artwork for the promotion of the Fine Arts Center Follies. The artwork depicted local businessman and Camden resident, Johnny Deal as a surfer catching the waves on fictional "Follies' Beach."

Santa to ride through Lugoff

The Lugoff Fire Department will have the honor of escorting Santa Claus through the neighborhoods in Lugoff this year. Santa will be escorted through different areas of the Lugoff community each night this week. Several residents of Lugoff have requested this event return to the community so children can have the opportunity to see the "Jolly One" before he comes on Christmas Night, LFD Chief Dennis Ray said.

King Haiglar Garden Club celebrates holiday season with Christmas tea, ornament exchange

The King Haiglar Garden Club celebrated its Christmas Tea and Ornament Exchange on Monday, Dec. 12. Judy Smith hosted the tea at 1819 Hobkirk Court in Camden. Linda Shaylor, Sandra Lease, and Mary Nelle Gore co-hosted the gathering. Members were reminded to bring a gift-wrapped ornament to exchange. There was no horticulture or arrangements. Garden maintenance for December is to be done by Cathy Moss and Mary Acken. Those attending enjoyed this festive time with other members and guests!

Happy 60th Anniversary!

Bill and Luna Clark were married December 10, 1951 and are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They live on Bayview Drive in Lugoff and have two children, Barry Dean Clark and Norma Lee Wilson. Drive through live Nativity scene to be held at Pine Grove Baptist

Pine Grove Baptist Church will host a drive-through nativity scene from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 16 - 17. The theme of the event is "God's Greatest Gift, Jesus Christ." Visitors are welcome to drive their vehicles (no buses, due to limited space) through to view the Nativity of live scenes with actors and animals. Compassionate Friends Midlands Chapter to participate in Worldwide Candle Lighting Sunday

The Compassionate Friends Midlands Chapter No. 2260 invites the public to participate in the Worldwide Candle Lighting. This event is to remember all children who have died too soon. Known as the largest candle lighting, this event is part of a 24-hour wave of light around the world. Candles burn around the world from 7-8 p.m. in every time zone. As candles are blown out in an area, the wave of light travels on.

Holiday Toy Train exhibit to open at Historic Camden Saturday

At the close of the 19th century, a German named Marklin introduced several series of gauged toy trains sets that included ready-to-use track sections, locomotives, cars and accessories, plus enticing add-on pieces for future Christmas and birthday gifts. Within two years, Lionel's first electric train was chugging around its track in holiday store windows beckoning all to the magical world of toy trains.

South Carolina State Guard and Red Cross host Hurricane Hike

The South Carolina State Guard and the Sandhills chapter of the American Red Cross joined forces Sept. 20 to host the 2014 State Guard Hurricane Hike. Aside from the hike, the day consisted of several activities including: family day events, a performance of the National Anthem and speakers. There were around 200 participants, volunteers and guests. The hike began at the Camden National Guard Armory where participants had to sign-in and have their backpacks weighed before the 10k hike. Winners were presented with awards.

Bethune native completes Marine Pilot program

Lt. Justin Steven Freeman, of Bethune, recently completed flight school for the Marines. Freeman entered the United States Marine Corps in Oct. 2011 and was named a second lieutenant that same month. He completed aviation preflight training in Nov. 2012 and primary flight training in Dec. 2012. Freeman began advanced helicopter training Feb. 2014 and was designated as a naval flight officer Aug. 22. He is set to fly the UH-IY (Huey), which is equipped to provide all six Marine Aviation functions.
