Camden Arts Association to hold annual member’s show

The Annual Camden Art Association (CAA) Members' Show will be on display from the 8th of December through Jan. 11, 2012 in the Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) The opening reception is Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the Claire Bryant and Friends Concert. Light hors d'ouevres and a cash bar will be available. The opening reception is sponsored by First Community Bank.

City of Camden to light tree Thursday

The City of Camden Christmas Tree Lighting will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Camden City Hall. Join the city of Camden, the Camden Community Concert Band and the Chamber Choir of Kershaw County at city hall to kick off the holiday season. The Downtown Camden Guild will be serving hot chocolate during the event.

St. Paul UMC, Sandhills Medical Foundation promote HIV/AIDS awareness

Hydeia Broadbent was abandoned at birth at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where Patricia and Loren Broadbent adopted her as an infant. Although her HIV condition was congenital, she was not diagnosed as HIV-positive with advancement to AIDS until age three. The prognosis was that she would not live past the age of five. Now at the age of 27, Hydeia spends her time spreading the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention by promoting abstinence, safe-sex practices (for people who choose to have sex), and the initiative "Knowing Your HIV/AIDS Status."

Santa to visit Lugoff Dec. 2

Santa is coming to town Dec. 2 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Lugoff-Elgin High School on U.S. 1 in Lugoff. Santa will be giving out stockings full of goodies to the kids, refreshments for everyone, and kids can have their picture made with him. Parents can take their own picture or professional photos will be available for purchase. Admission is free and kids can tour the fire trucks and get fire prevention materials. Lugoff-Elgin Girl Scout Troop looks back on achievements in 2011, plans for 2012

Once again your Lugoff-Elgin Girl Scout Troop No. 968 is reporting on our activities. We have had a very good year and a wonderful summer with four of our girls, Amber Mitchell, Jessica Black, MacKenzie Saverance, and Olivia Lamphere, all earning their Bronze Award. These girls worked hard over the summer making and painting birdhouses, wind chimes, and a bird bath for the residents of Springdale Nursing Home. The girls did a wonderful job and all the people are really enjoying their endeavors.

Blaney receives seed grant from KershawHealth

Blaney Elementary School in Elgin is launching a campaign to fund a half-mile walking track and fitness trial on the school's property. This project will benefit not only Blaney students, but students from nearby Leslie M. Stover Middle School as well as residents of surrounding communities.

Colonial Christmas at Historic Camden

It's unlikely that today's kids will be asking Santa for a "bird on Bellows, Prussian Dragoon, Tunbridge Tea Sett, or neatly dress'd Wax Baby." That's what Jackie and Patsey Custis received as Christmas gifts from their new stepfather, George Washington, in 1759. Not from under the Christmas tree, mind you. Christmas trees and Santa Claus weren't introduced until the 19th century!

Bethune Tour of Homes

The Bethune Womans Club is sponsoring a Bethune Tour of Homes Dec. 4. Happy Feet

In early November, the Camden and West Wateree Rotary Clubs came together to provide shoes for Kershaw County students in need. The program, "Happy Feet", gave deserving children vouchers to purchase a new pair of shoes at the Camden K-Mart.

Quilts of Valor honors 5 Kershaw County veterans

Five Kershaw County veterans received quilts in the Douglas Reed House at the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County this week. The Kershaw County Quilters branch of the Quilts of Valor Foundation recognized the veterans for their service in conflicts dating back to the Korean War.
