Boykin Christmas Parade fired up for second shotgun wedding

When Deirdra Young and Jody Atkinson, longtime sweethearts, heard broadcaster Dave McIntosh on KOOL 102.7 FM announce that the Shotgun Wedding Committee was looking for volunteers to be married during the annual Boykin Country Christmas Parade, Deirdra shouted, "That's us!"

Holiday Toy Train exhibit to open at Historic Camden Saturday

At the close of the 19th century, a German named Marklin introduced several series of gauged toy trains sets that included ready-to-use track sections, locomotives, cars and accessories, plus enticing add-on pieces for future Christmas and birthday gifts. Within two years, Lionel's first electric train was chugging around its track in holiday store windows beckoning all to the magical world of toy trains.

Camden Arts Association to hold annual member’s show

The Annual Camden Art Association (CAA) Members' Show will be on display from the 8th of December through Jan. 11, 2012 in the Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) The opening reception is Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the Claire Bryant and Friends Concert. City of Camden to light tree Thursday

The City of Camden Christmas Tree Lighting will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Camden City Hall. St. Paul UMC, Sandhills Medical Foundation promote HIV/AIDS awareness

Hydeia Broadbent was abandoned at birth at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where Patricia and Loren Broadbent adopted her as an infant. Although her HIV condition was congenital, she was not diagnosed as HIV-positive with advancement to AIDS until age three. The prognosis was that she would not live past the age of five. Now at the age of 27, Hydeia spends her time spreading the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention by promoting abstinence, safe-sex practices (for people who choose to have sex), and the initiative "Knowing Your HIV/AIDS Status."

Santa to visit Lugoff Dec. 2

Santa is coming to town Dec. 2 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Lugoff-Elgin High School on U.S. 1 in Lugoff. Santa will be giving out stockings full of goodies to the kids, refreshments for everyone, and kids can have their picture made with him. Parents can take their own picture or professional photos will be available for purchase. Admission is free and kids can tour the fire trucks and get fire prevention materials. Lugoff-Elgin Girl Scout Troop looks back on achievements in 2011, plans for 2012

Once again your Lugoff-Elgin Girl Scout Troop No. 968 is reporting on our activities. We have had a very good year and a wonderful summer with four of our girls, Amber Mitchell, Jessica Black, MacKenzie Saverance, and Olivia Lamphere, all earning their Bronze Award. These girls worked hard over the summer making and painting birdhouses, wind chimes, and a bird bath for the residents of Springdale Nursing Home. The girls did a wonderful job and all the people are really enjoying their endeavors.

Blaney receives seed grant from KershawHealth

Blaney Elementary School in Elgin is launching a campaign to fund a half-mile walking track and fitness trial on the school's property. This project will benefit not only Blaney students, but students from nearby Leslie M. Stover Middle School as well as residents of surrounding communities.

Pine Tree Hill Elementary and North Central Middle School students observe 9/11

North Central Middle School students read a script accounting the 9/11 events minute by minute. They read the exact time when the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers, the exact time when President George W. Bush was notified, the exact time that the second plane crashed into the towers, the exact time that the Pentagon was struck and more events that occured on that day. Pine Tree Hill students observed 9/11 by wearing red, white and blue, and they had special lessons about the importance of that day.
