FAC to host Southeastern Americana exhibit

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is planning to show the Southeastern Americana exhibit on Saturday, Sept. 15. In conjunction with the finale of Kershaw County's Got Talent, a black and white photography exhibit by Lugoff photographer Robbie Hinson will open in the Bassett Gallery with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed by the Kershaw County's Got Talent Finale at 7 p.m. The exhibit will run through Oct. 12.

Camden High School's (CHS) band room filled with students warming up for practice Wednesday afternoon. An impromptu jam session broke out for a few minutes before CHS band director Robert Spitler called students to run through scales.

L-EHS student wins 4-H dressage competition

Adriana McMurphy, a senior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, was named the state champion in the 4-H dressage competition. She is 18 years old and has been a 4-Her in the Kershaw County 4H Horse Club for one and a half years. She serves as treasurer for her club and has been riding and competing since elementary school. She is the daughter of James and Karen McMurphy.

FAC holding auditions for Kershaw County's Got Talent

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is proud to announce auditions for Kershaw County's Got Talent. Beginning Sept. 4, the FAC will hold three nights of auditions throughout the county for the third annual Kershaw County's Got Talent -- a talent competition for Kershaw County residents. This year, there are two categories: Youth, ages 6 to 15, and Adult, ages 16 and up. The final competition is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 at the FAC of Kershaw County. Kershaw County's Got Talent is sponsored by McDonalds of Camden.

Campers learn safety at 2012 STARS camp

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) held its STARS camp at Lugoff Elgin Middle School the week of July 23. Other STARS camps were held at North Central and in Camden. The acronym STARS stands for Self discipline, Teamwork, Attitude, Respect and Service. Middle school age campers learned how to be safe on the Internet, the importance of wearing seat belts, anti-bullying techniques, crime scene investigation, forensics, prosecuting criminal cases, basic first aid, the dangers of substance abuse, fire safety and general police techniques.

Can we crash at your place for awhile?

It was a sweltering hot day at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, but that didn't stop volunteers from coming out and walking dogs, playing with puppies and cuddling with kittens. Throughout the week, dedicated volunteers come to the shelter not only to spend time with the animals, but to take photos and help place them in foster homes. These foster homes are only a temporary stop before they are able to be sent to rescue groups such as the North County Animal League in Vermont and the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons Inc. in New York.

Camden Fire Department and EMS participate in local apartment health fair

Wednesday, Steeplechase Apartments held a health fair for residents. Approximately 50 residents and their children came out to participate in health screenings, receive insurance information and make jewelry.

World’s Miss Tourism Pageant

Cassandra Grace Gibson of Lugoff will be representing South Carolina in the World's Miss Tourism Pageant. The pageant takes place Friday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 2 in Clarksville, Tenn. Casey, a student at North Central High School, currently holds the title of World's Miss Teen South Carolina Tourism 2015. She will be competing against teens from all over the United States, as well as Canada and the Bahamas. Pageant competition categories include beauty, photogenic, interview and theme-wear representing the contestant's state.

Mary-Grace Hill

Nine year old actress Mary-Grace Hill, a student at Wateree Elementary School and daughter of Moichelle Hill, was recently in a commercial with S.C. State Treasurer Curtis M. Loftis Jr. The commercial, which promotes the State Treasurer's Office's Future Scholars incentive, was filmed June 23. Mary-Grace and her twin brother, Blaize, also an actor, have appeared in several movies including "Unknown", "Ashby", "Far From an Altar Call", "Unspoken Words", and "The Imperfect Human", as well as participated in Celebrity Cancer Runway Showcases and appeared in a Citi Trends commercial.
