FAC presents ‘Follies’ Beach, Global Village Photographer solo exhibit

The "girls" are hitting the beach in tonight and tomorrow's production of the popular Fine Arts Follies! Through the miracles of make-up, some fine tuning in the wardrobe department and some "shifting of shape," local business and professional men from across Kershaw County are "transformed" as they showcase their, er, talents, as the Camden Community Theatre (CCT) and the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) present the return of the riotous Fine Arts Follies tonight and tomorrow evenings at 8 p.m.

16th annual Fire Fest scheduled Saturday

The 16th annual Fire Fest 2011 will take place Saturday at Rhame City Arena in Camden. The event will kick off with a parade at 9 a.m. through downtown Camden. This family event will also include skydivers, vendors, kids' games, food, exhibitors and firefighter competition. The sky divers will enter around 9:45 a.m. and the opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Activities for children will include bounce-arounds, pony rides and games.

Pancake breakfast to be held for L-EHS journalism dept.

The Lugoff-Elgin High School journalism department will host a pancake breakfast at the FATZ in Camden, located at 212 Wall Street on Sept. 24. From 7:30 to 10 a.m. FATZ will open its doors to members of the community and transform into a hotspot for hotcakes to raise money to support the L-EHS journalism department. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to help the students of the yearbook team pay to attend local and regional scholastic journalism conferences where they can receive in-depth instruction from professionals and nationally recognized journalism teachers.

Bank of America donates money to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Young Leadership Committee of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is organizing a poker run to raise money for type 1 diabetes. The poker run, "Hawg-Wild for the Cure," will be held on Oct. 15.

Crutcher visits Kershaw County

Award winning author Chris Crutcher will speak at the Kershaw County Fine Arts Center on Tuesday. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m., followed by a talk at 6:30 p.m. This event is hosted by the Kershaw County Library.

The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) kicked off its 2012 campaign Monday, with the highlight coming early in the morning when Kershaw County School District Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan was soaked with water guns outside the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC).

FAC holds auditions for teen production, Zombie Prom

Auditions for a teen production at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) are fast approaching! "Zombie Prom," a collaboration with the FAC and Columbia Children's Theatre will be held Thursday and Sunday in the Douglas-Reed House at the FAC starting at 6:30 p.m. Zombie Prom will be directed by Jerry Stevenson, artistic director of the Columbia Children's Theatre (CCT.) Children ages 10 and up are encouraged to come and participate. There is no audition fee.

Free movie showing at KC Farmers Market Friday night

The Kershaw County Farmers Market will sport a big screen come Friday night. "Movie at the Market" will offer free concessions and childrens inflatables along with the showing of "Megamind." Camden Garden Club to meet Monday

It is a warm summer day as I sit on my veranda sipping sweet tea with a light breeze blowing through the trees. I gaze out over the sweeping gardens and terraces of lush flowering bushes and shrubs and overstuffed pots and containers. Ahhh, life is good! Then, POOF! I open my eyes and face reality! In the shade it is probably 110 degrees, there is NO breeze, the humidity is hovering around 100 percent. I don't have a veranda and I am not sipping any tea. Blaney Principal Ed Yount dresses up as promised

Blaney Elementary's Principal, Mr. Ed Yount, is a man of his word. He challenged Blaney's teachers and students to raise $1500 for the United Way during the first week of school, and if the challenge was met, he would come to school dressed as a woman. As of Friday, August 22, $1530 was raised and Mr. Yount kept his promise by arriving on August 29th in costume.
