The Camden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated held its Second Annual Debutante Cotillion: Belles of the Crimson Radiance in May at the Shrine Club in Camden. The Cotillion Ball is a rite of passage provided to exemplary young ladies in the Camden and surrounding areas.
Jane Brady will celebrate her 90th birthday Saturday, July 16. She was raised in Birmingham, Ala. She is the widow of the late E.P. Brady Jr.

In June the S. C. Division Children of the Confederacy (C of C) along with John D. Kennedy Chapter No. 308 United Daughters of the Confederacy and Joseph B. Kershaw Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp No. 81 rededicated three of Camden's Confederate Monuments which were erected in 1911: The Pantheon in Rectory Square, The Richard Kirkland Memorial Fountain in Hampton Park, and Richard Kirkland's Grave in Quaker Cemetery.
The Kershaw County Back to School Bash Committee utilizes community resources to provide free school supplies to area youth and help families access information and services within the community. The committee is celebrating its 15th year of service to the community and anticipates assisting approximately 1,500 elementary, middle, high and college students from Kershaw County and surrounding areas.
Students in the Camden First Baptist Kindergarten and Child Care walked in the church's annual Fourth of July Parade in honor of Independence Day on June 30. In total, 80 children, 19 teachers and two parents participated. The group started at the church on Walnut Street, turned rights on Broad Street, turned right on DeKalb Street and doubled back to Walnut Street to complete the parade. Luanne Stallings directed the event.
The American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 participated in selecting and sponsoring five delegates from Kershaw County to attend Palmetto Girls State June 12-18. The tuition of each student was shared by the unit and American Legion Post 17 members.
The 2011 CLASS Shag Blast was held June 11 at the Camden Shrine Club. It is the Camden Lugoff Area Shag Society's annual major fund raising event. This year the CLASS Shag Blast benefited the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and Food for the Soul of Kershaw County. Thanks to sponsors and the work of club members, $3,600 was donated to the organizations. This is the most the club has been able to donate in the last seven years.
One Elgin home received a makeover from Blaney Baptist youth and adults during the Elgin Construction Blitz last week.

Food for the Soul has announced the names of regional coordinators for their Pass the Plate fundraising campaign. The campaign is underway and will conclude Aug. 14.
The Hobkirk Hill Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented medals to JROTC students and "Good Citizens" at the Kershaw-Cornwallis House at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Park on May 12. The Daughters of the American Revolution's time honored objectives of perpetuating the memory of those who achieved American independence, promoting an enlightened public and fostering patriotic citizenship are certainly realized when we honor these exceptional young Americans.
Camden's Carley Powers, Miss River City, competed in swimsuit during Tuesday night's preliminary competition in The Miss South Carolina Pageant. A new Miss SC will be crowned Saturday night at the Township Auditorium. Miss Camden 2011, Sallie Pierce, competed in the evening gown portion in Tuesday night's preliminary competition at the Miss SC Pageant. Finals are tomorrow evening at the Township Auditorium in Columbia. This is the pageant's 75th Anniversary and the first time ever being held in Columbia.
The annual Fall Coin Show of the Camden Coin Club will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Camden Recreation Department, 1042 West DeKalb St., Camden.

Camden Walmart customers know that it's back to school time again when they see the school bus out in front of the store promoting the partnership between the store and the Kershaw County School District to help local needy students receive school supplies. Walmart's annual "Pack A Bus" campaign kicks off Friday and runs for two weeks.
