FAC holds auditions for teen production, Zombie Prom

Auditions for a teen production at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) are fast approaching! "Zombie Prom," a collaboration with the FAC and Columbia Children's Theatre will be held Thursday and Sunday in the Douglas-Reed House at the FAC starting at 6:30 p.m. Zombie Prom will be directed by Jerry Stevenson, artistic director of the Columbia Children's Theatre (CCT.) Children ages 10 and up are encouraged to come and participate. There is no audition fee.

Free movie showing at KC Farmers Market Friday night

The Kershaw County Farmers Market will sport a big screen come Friday night. "Movie at the Market" will offer free concessions and childrens inflatables along with the showing of "Megamind." Activites begin at 6:30 p.m. The movie will begin at 8 p.m. The program is sponsored by Malvern Hill Baptist Church, Agape Hospice and First Community Bank.

Camden Garden Club to meet Monday

It is a warm summer day as I sit on my veranda sipping sweet tea with a light breeze blowing through the trees. I gaze out over the sweeping gardens and terraces of lush flowering bushes and shrubs and overstuffed pots and containers. Ahhh, life is good! Then, POOF! I open my eyes and face reality! Camden Art Association to host artist Shirley as September meeting guest speaker

The Camden Art Association (CAA), an affiliate organization of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) will hold their first meeting of the new year at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12 in the Bassett Gallery at the FAC. The group will host Colt Shirley as the guest speaker. The Bassett Gallery is located at 810 Lyttleton St. in the Bassett Building. There is no charge for the program and the public is invited to attend.

One hundred and seventy three Harvest Moons ago the Cherokee Nation, including many from the Carolinas, made ready to join the other Southeastern tribes who had been forced by the Federal Government to relinquish their lands and relocate to Oklahoma. Some 4,000 of the 20,000 Cherokee died that bitter cold winter of 1838 while making the grueling 1,000-mile journey that became known as the "Trail of Tears."

L-E student earns graphic design award

Karissa Tolliver, a junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, earned a third place award for her graphic design in the Graphic Arts Education Reseach Foundation (GAERF) 2011 Student Design Competition. Karissa is a student at the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) in Camden.

Camden Community Concert Band strikes up another season

The Camden Community Concert Band will kick off their 2011-12 concert season with its first practice on Monday, Sept. 12. The CCCB, directed by Pat Wylie and assisted by Robert Wertz, is open to anyone who plays or has played a musical instrument in the past. The band needs to add players in ALL sections of the band, but especially percussion. No auditions are required and the rehearsal atmosphere is informal.

Pine Tree Hill Elementary and North Central Middle School students observe 9/11

North Central Middle School students read a script accounting the 9/11 events minute by minute. They read the exact time when the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers, the exact time when President George W. Bush was notified, the exact time that the second plane crashed into the towers, the exact time that the Pentagon was struck and more events that occured on that day. Pine Tree Hill students observed 9/11 by wearing red, white and blue, and they had special lessons about the importance of that day.

Mayor Scully makes first donation to Knights of Columbus for annual drive

The Knights of Columbus Council of Camden will not kick off their annual Operation Hope Drive until Sept. 25, but Mayor Tony Scully made a donation at Camden City Hall Wednesday, Sept. 10, making him the first person to donate and get the first Tootise Roll from the Knights.

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County invites the public to an evening of dance and entertainment at its second annual presentation of "Dancing with the Stars," Saturday, Sept. 20. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour with appetizers catered by Carolina Café at 7 p.m. and the performances will start at 8 p.m.
