Blues returns for 21st year

Produced and presented by the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County, the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival celebrates its 21st year. Touted by blues aficionados as South Carolina's oldest continuous blues crawl, this year's event, scheduled for Oct. 5-7, features more than 21 artists in 15 venues over three days. Hobkirk Hill DAR kicks off 2017

The Hobkirk Hill Chapter NSDAR kicked off its new year with a meeting at Historic Camden's MaCaa's Tavern on Sept. 14. The chapter honored long time registrar, Phyllis Lyster Gale, for her dedicated service to the chapter. Ann Martin, chapter historian, presented Gale with a plaque noting her service. A duplicate plaque was given to the Camden Archives to be hung in the DAR research room.

Invitations mailed, website posted for CHS 50th reunion

Invitations to the 50th reunion of Camden High School's Class of 1967 have been mailed to classmates with known addresses, and the reunion committee has created a website to share information and updates on the Oct.14 event.

Historian to speak on Carolina Backcountry History at KCHS

A multi-faceted historian and author of several locally relevant books will speak at the Kershaw County Historical Society's 3 p.m. public program Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Robert Mills Courthouse, 607 Broad Street, Camden.

Former USC football players visit DME students

Authors Langston Moore and Preston Thorne, who are also former University of South Carolina football players, visited with all Doby's Mill Elementary School students, sharing their book, "#justachicken," and talking about the importance of reading and writing. They also had lunch with a select group of 4th and 5th grade boys, offering leadership and motivational advice.

Dancing with the Stars returns to FAC

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County invites you to an evening of dance and entertainment at its fifth annual presentation of Dancing with the Stars. A FUNdraiser for the Center. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 23 in the Wood Auditorium. A cocktail hour and voting period will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. with light hors d'oeuvres from Ashley's at Old McCaskill's Farm, followed by the performance at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 and are on sale now. The event is sponsored by McDonald's of Camden/Sensor Enterprises.

Big bass

Twins James and Caroline Reames, both 11, of Camden, recently landed these lunkers while fishing on family property in Kershaw County. The big fish, both largemouth bass, were caught on two different days from the same pond. James' was 12 pounds (first picture). Caroline, shown here with her dad, Rick (second picture), caught hers a week later and it was 8 pounds.

CCG season starts

The new season is about to begin for members of the Camden Garden Club. During the summer, club officers were busy planning, arranging and getting things ready. They weren't the only ones staying busy. During the summer, members took turns watering the flowers in the planters at the intersections of Broad and DeKalb streets and Broad and Rutledge streets. This is a huge undertaking with the South Carolina heat. Luckily, the club had help from the Liz Gillard with the city of Camden, who alternated days in the watering. The plants are pink bogavilla.

King Haiglar Garden Club meets Monday

The King Haiglar Garden Club will meet Monday at 3 p.m. at the home of Marietta Gordon. The theme for artistic arrangements is "September is a second spring when every leaf is a flower." Flowers and/or leaves can be used in the arrangements.

KCMA benefit concert is Sept. 17

The Kershaw County Music Association (KCMA), an affiliate member of the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County, will hold a benefit concert Sunday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton St., Camden. The concert will be free, however, donations are encouraged and appreciated. Proceeds will benefit the KCMA Music Scholarship Fund. KCMA and Lyttleton Street Methodist Church are co-hosting the event.
