During the end of the school year, the National Junior Beta Club at Stover Middle School completed a service project in which they collected DVDs for the children at Palmetto Health Richland. They collected approximately 300 movies and raised $715 through classroom challenges for the purchase of additional movies. The movies were presented to representatives of Palmetto Health Richland Children's Hospital. Thank you to the students, staff, and community members who participated in such a worthwhile cause.
Saturday marks the start of the Miss South Carolina and Miss South Carolina Teen competition for 78 young ladies, two of which will be representing Camden. Abbie Zvejnieks was crowned Miss Camden the beginning of this year along with Olivia Loynes who was crowned Miss Camden Teen. Abbie will be attending Wake Forest in the fall and Olivia is a rising junior at North Central High School.
Arts Arising celebrates its 25th year this summer. The program began in 1988 through a partnership with the Kershaw County School District and the Fine Arts Center. This year, more than 120 children from Kershaw County schools are participating.
The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) will close out its popular free outdoor concert series, Finally Friday with Reflections, a Camden favorite. The concert will take place Friday, June 26 at the Shull Pavilion behind the Wood Auditorium from 6 until 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and food and beverages will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The rain location will be on the stage in the Wood Auditorium.
Lugoff First Baptist's Children's Ministry Center 4K class, led by April McCaa and Dorothy Kessler, raised $708 for Food for the Soul by bringing in change and having a bake sale. They were so excited to share with others and show God's love. The class told the workers at Food for the Soul that "Jesus helped us raise the money!"
Epsilon Beta Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. recently added two new members, Alison Bennett, left, and Harriett Shepherd, at a ceremony held in May at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Odean Hill of Epsilon Beta Chapter noted that both ladies are extremely talented and will bring their skills to Epsilon Beta Chapter. A luncheon attended by family and friends followed the induction ceremony.
Mrs. Sarah Belton Rutherford celebrates her 97th birthday on June 8. She is a mom, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and a great-great-great grandmother. "We all love her very much," her daughter, Mrs. Earline R. Frierson said.
