The John D. Kennedy Chapter 308, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and Joseph B. Kershaw Camp 82, Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) sponsored an observance of Confederate Memorial Day on May 10 at Monument Square in Camden. The guest speaker was Jack Marlar, SCV, Fountain Inn.
On June 1, Cathy Humphries of Sumter and her 29-year-old Arabian horse Mizahrr (Tex) joined a very elite group -- the Century Club. She is the 169th person in the entire US and only the second in South Carolina to become a member, joining Harriet Kiehl of Camden.
Zackary Truesdale, the son of Kristina and Philippe Truesdale, was formerly a student of the Kershaw County School District. He recently graduated from the South Carolina Governor's School for Arts and Humanities (GSAH) in Greenville. Truesdale began percussion lessons at the age of 16 with Nicholas Guiliano at the University of South Carolina School of Music.
The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees named Tarry McGovern to be the district's new special services director and Judith McCray to be an assistant principal at Camden High School (CHS) for the 2014-15 school year.
The town of Elgin will host a chicken bog fundraiser dinner June 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church's Fellowship Hall. Tikets can be purchased from Elgin Town Hall and the cost is $7.50 per adult and $4 per child (12 and under). You can bring your family and dine in or stop by and pick up a to-go plate. All proceeds raised from this dinner will be used to assist in the construction of the Elgin Military Salute Monument, which is located at Potter Community Park in Elgin. The 2014 Clinic Classic 5K/10K was held April 26 in downtown Camden. The annual event benefits the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County. Awards were given to the top male and female runners and age groups. For the 5K race, the top male overall runner was Ryan Plexico of Columbia, with a time of 17:11. The staff of Camden High School's newspaper, The Palmetto Leaf, came away from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association's (SCSPA) Spring Conference April 22 with a handful of honors and awards. Staffs may submit one entry each semester in 11 of 12 different categories.
The Kershaw County Council on Aging Senior Center, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services, will be issuing free coupons to low income individuals age 60 and older that may be used to purchase fresh produce at local participating farmers markets. Each eligible person will receive $25 worth of coupons that may be used at participating markets from May through October 15. The coupons will be issued on a first-come first-served basis until the supply is exhausted.
The Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club (KCARC) will be setting up a booth and radio station at the Kershaw County Farmers Market Saturday and again May 24. The club's mission is to provide emergency communications to the community, present information to better prepare the community for those emergencies and inspire interest in the hobby. KCARC has been designated a special services club by the Amateur Radio Relay League, along with being Ambassadors for the Weather Ready Nation program.
Kershaw County residents and visitors will converge upon Historic Camden, 222 S. Broad St., Camden for what Executive Director Joanna Craig said is the biggest yearly event at the site. This weekend's event, Revolutionary War Field Days Saturday and Sunday, is the 44th gathering at Historic Camden.
Miss Jacqueline Renee Burns and Mr. Matthew William Douglas Koven were married October 18, 2014 at 5 o'clock in the evening at Grace Church in Camden. The double-ring ceremony was officiated by Reverend Robert W. Eldridge of St. Stephen's Church in Ridgeway. Following the ceremony a reception was held at Springdale Hall Club hosted by the bride's parents.
Historic Camden will be hosting the "Almost There Party Premier Photograph Exhibit" by Cynthia Davis-Fussell from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the John McCaa House (McCaa's Tavern). A follow-up of last fall's popular "Bare Walls Party," this event will give guests the opportunity to see the progress of the restoration of McCaa's Tavern that occurred during the past 12 months. The event will also include a festive evening of food and entertainment, with music provided by local talents Ed Grossheim and Friends.
