Teen Miss Cayce 2012

Miss Clara Amanda Bodie of Camden won Teen Miss Cayce 2012 on Aug. 20. Bodie is the 17-year-old daughter of Keith and Michelle Bodie and is a senior at Mt. Olivet Christian School. The pageant took place at Lexington Middle School. She also won LMSC Cayce Sweetheart 2012, Prettiest Smile, and Most Photogenic in color and snapshot divisions. The Little Miss SC Pageant is in June 2012 in Hartsville where she will compete as Teen Miss Cayce.

LFD to host memorial event in honor of fallen 9/11 firefighters

The Lugoff Fire Department will host a 9/11 Memorial event Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Lugoff-Elgin High School Staduim. Firefighters from across South Carolina as well as family members and citizens are invited to attend. The event will begin with a media press conference at 9 a.m. Around 9:30 a.m., firefighters and attendees will be allowed to climb the stadium steps to remember the 343 firefighters who gave their lives in the World Trade Center attack 10 years ago this year. Eat Smart Move More Kershaw County has bike racks installed to encourage healthy living

As gas prices settle at over $3 per gallon, many people are looking for alternative forms of transportation. One such option is riding a bicycle. To support those that choose to cycle in Camden, Eat Smart Move More Kershaw County has worked with the city of Camden and Kershaw County government to install bike racks at various locations throughout the city.

Why would more than a dozen teen and college students spend a portion of their summer vacation volunteering at KershawHealth medical center? For some -- especially younger students -- it's a chance to gain valuable work experience. Others are looking for opportunities that can help give life to a medical school applicant's personal statement, or add valuable "points" to school or scholarship applications to give them a competitive edge. For most, though, it's the opportunity to learn more about healthcare and to get that all-important insider's view of the industry.

Fine Arts Follies are back

Have you ever wanted to be a part of the Fine Arts Follies? Always wondered what really happens "behind the scenes" or "on stage," but were afraid to ask? Well now is your chance! In September the Fine Arts Follies returns to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) where an all male revue featuring Kershaw County businessmen will strut their stuff on stage! Driving for charity

The Hospital Auxiliary of Kershaw County will host its 22nd annual golf tournament on Friday, September 16 at White Pines Golf Course in Camden. Entry fee for the captain's choice tournament is $50 per person or $200 for a four-person team. Fees include cart, greens fee, mulligan and souvenir.

The Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) awarded Patricia Plyler Watts with the Community Service Award on Monday, Sept. 15. The Kershaw County Library will host a talk by Doug Peach, South Carolina Folklife and Traditional Arts Program Coordinator at the McKissick Museum (University of South Carolina) and the South Carolina Arts Commission, on the history of the Blues in South Carolina. The talk, which will focus on the musicians, culture, and style of music known as the "Piedmont Blues," will be held at the Camden Library on Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

South Carolina State Guard and Red Cross host Hurricane Hike

The South Carolina State Guard and the Sandhills chapter of the American Red Cross joined forces Sept. 20 to host the 2014 State Guard Hurricane Hike. Aside from the hike, the day consisted of several activities including: family day events, a performance of the National Anthem and speakers. There were around 200 participants, volunteers and guests. The hike began at the Camden National Guard Armory where participants had to sign-in and have their backpacks weighed before the 10k hike. Winners were presented with awards.

Bethune native completes Marine Pilot program

Lt. Justin Steven Freeman, of Bethune, recently completed flight school for the Marines. Freeman entered the United States Marine Corps in Oct. 2011 and was named a second lieutenant that same month. He completed aviation preflight training in Nov. 2012 and primary flight training in Dec. 2012. Freeman began advanced helicopter training Feb. 2014 and was designated as a naval flight officer Aug. 22. He is set to fly the UH-IY (Huey), which is equipped to provide all six Marine Aviation functions.
