Happy 60th Anniversary!

Jerryl and Betty Blyther celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 7, 2011. They have two children, Jerie Hancock and her husband Rusty and Lynda Self. They are also blessed with three grandchildren, Casey Hancock, Lindsey Self and Jamie Self. They were married June 7, 1951 at Lyttleton St. Methodist Church, Camden .

Crabb to perform free concert at Lugoff church

Jason Crabb will be performing at El-Bethel Church's Family Life Center Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert is free, but love offerings will be accepted. Lugoff Optimist Club honors oratorical contest winner, finalists

The Lugoff Optimists welcomed five students to the May meeting at Halls Restaurant in Lugoff. Oratorical contest finalists Austen Haney from Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, Claire Yount from L-EMS, Azhane Kinlaw from Stover Middle School (SMS) and Optimist Oratorical Contest State of South Carolina champion Nathan Fuller from SMS, performed their speeches for the audience. The Lugoff Optimist Club has sponsored three of the last six state champion oratorical contest winners. Pictured above are Haney, Yount, Lugoff Optimist Warren Wood, Kinlaw and Fuller.

Kennington presented with scholarship

Meleeia Danielle Kennington was presented with the Samantha Joy Sullivan Memorial Scholarship at the 2011 Bethune Chicken Strut. The scholarship was created in the memory of Samantha, Junior Miss Chicken Strut 2000. Samantha showed what true kindness as to everyone she met and graciously set an example for her peers as well as setting an example for girls of all ages in representing their title.

Optimist Club awards scholarship

Andrew Taylor of Lugoff-Elgin High School was awarded the Irene Gettys Scholarship from the Lugoff Optimist Club. The scholarship is worth $1,000. Taylor plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in computer science. Food for the Soul Passes the Plate

Food for the Soul, a Camden-based ministry that provides meals to the hungry and homeless in Kershaw County, will kick off its Pass the Plate! fundraising campaign on Sunday, when several area churches will collect special offerings to support the charitable organization. The campaign, which will conclude Sunday, August 14, will focus on "passing the plate" in local civic groups, community organizations, businesses and churches around the county.

Camden Rotary Club awards scholarships

The Camden Rotary Club awarded six scholarships to local seniors. Four students received $1,000 each and two students received $500 each for having the two highest SAT/ACT scores at Camden High School. Happy 50th Anniversary!

David and Brenda Cole of Camden celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary June 3, 2011. They were honored with a surprise luncheon with family and friends June 4, 2011 at Springvale Baptist Church in Lugoff. The couple was married June 3, in Charlotte, North Carolina. They have three children: Brent Cole and wife Sharon of Lugoff, Lorrie Scudder and husband Keith of Sumter, and Terry Lynn Higgins and husband David of Camden. They have six grandchildren: Austin Higgins, Brady Higgins, Hannah Cole, Nicholas Scudder, Mackenzie Higgins, and Sydney Scudder.

Helping those in need

Roosevelt Halley (left) and David Engram (right) left on May 19 to help with the relief efforts in Epes, Ala., where the homes of hundreds of people were torn apart in late April by violent storms and tornados. Halley and Engram helped work on damaged homes of victims. They also carried a truckload of supplies with them. Some of the supplies included bottled water, instant meals, cleaning products, paper towels and other needed items. Pine Tree Hill Elementary and North Central Middle School students observe 9/11

North Central Middle School students read a script accounting the 9/11 events minute by minute. They read the exact time when the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers, the exact time when President George W. Bush was notified, the exact time that the second plane crashed into the towers, the exact time that the Pentagon was struck and more events that occured on that day. Pine Tree Hill students observed 9/11 by wearing red, white and blue, and they had special lessons about the importance of that day.
