Camden native named Miss South Carolina Heart of America

Bre'Anna T. Hayes of Camden has been awarded the title of 2011 Miss South Carolina Heart of America, for Miss Heart of America, LLC, producers of the nationally recognized Miss Heart of America Pageant Program. She will be representing her state at the 2011 Miss Heart of America Nationals on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Orlando, Fla. where she will be competing for a $5,000 scholarship along with other titles and prizes.

Ridgeway assisted living home gives donation to LES

The residents and staff at Southwinds Assisted Living Facility in Ridgeway took up a collection of school supplies to donate to Lugoff Elementary School. The supplies will be used in Lynn Looney's special education class.

Program encourages communication between parents and teens

The Family Resource Center will be running workshops for Kershaw County parents, and other adults working with teens designed to help start discussions with about self-esteem, puberty/sexuality, mixed messages in the media, peer pressure ect. The first workshop will be held at the United Way of Kershaw County, located at 110 East DeKalb Street Camden, Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Archaeologist to speak about Johanness Kolb site during Lyceum Series

During the 1730s, when the Township Plan was devised to entice interior settlement via offers of free land (Fredericksburg, later Camden, being one), a group of Welsh Baptists from New Jersey were granted land to settle either side of the Pee Dee River. The settlement became known as the Welsh Tract. Johannes Kolb, a German farmer who had emigrated to New Jersey in 1704, was among those who acquired land in the tract in the late 1730s.

Beta Sigma Phi celebrates 80 years

This year is the 80th anniversary of the social sorority Beta Sigma Phi. There has been a chapter of this organization in Kershaw County for more than 50 years. Quilts of Valor honors 5 Kershaw County veterans

Five Kershaw County veterans received quilts in the Douglas Reed House at the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County this week. The Kershaw County Quilters branch of the Quilts of Valor Foundation recognized the veterans for their service in conflicts dating back to the Korean War.
