DAR celebrates 110 years of community service

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), founded in 1890, was a group of women that organized the DAR after being refused membership into the men's groups -- even though there were proven female patriots that served during the Revolutionary War. These determined ladies took up the banner of female equality and led the charge to honor all patriots regardless of gender or color.

Where's Waldo?

The famous children's book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting 25 different local businesses throughout the community this July. Those who spot him can win prizes, including buttons, book coupons and more. From Schmucker's Amish General Store at 1040A Broad St. to Ole Timey Meat Market at 405 Rutledge St., and from Littlefield Growers at 907 Broad St. to Sweet Repeats at 1104 Campbell St., Waldo figures will be well hidden in local business establishments.

New members

The Iota Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recently welcomed 10 new members. The women celebrated this milestone with their friends and family at a luncheon at Bethelem Baptist Church Conference Center in Lugoff. The 10 were initiated into a distinguished group of thousands of college educated women of color whose mission is to continue its proclamation of sisterhood and service to mankind. Matt Autrey Project takes stage for Finally Friday

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County will present the last Finally Friday Free Concert of the season on Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The season finale will feature The Matt Autrey Project. Finally Friday will take place at the Shull Pavilion located behind the Wood Auditorium on the grounds of the FAC. The Finally Friday Free Concert Series is sponsored by Duke Energy, NBSC, Alpine Agency, Graham Realty, Fellers Furniture Company, Gadgets of Camden and City Laundry & Cleaners.
