Kershaw County Volunteer Guardians ad Litem to be honored at South Carolina Heart Gallery opening

Kershaw County Volunteer Guardians ad Litem (GAL) will be honored at a reception to be held tonight at the Fine Arts Center. The reception, scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is in conjunction with a traveling exhibit that underscores South Carolina's adoption needs. The South Carolina Heart Gallery is a collection of photographs depicting children who are available for adoption. For every child who comes into foster care, there is a court appointed Guardian ad Litem, most often a specially trained volunteer from the community whose focus is the best interest of the child.

Camden Junior Welfare League offers grants, scholarships to community organizations

The Camden Junior Welfare League is now accepting applications for grant money to be awarded to 501 (C)(3) organizations specifically dealing with children in the Kershaw County area. Grants range from $250 to $2,500. The application is available for download at www.camdenleague.com and completed proposals should be mailed to CJWL, P.O. Box 578, Camden, SC, 29021. Proposals must be received by April 1, 2011. If you have any questions, you may contact Nikki Ingram at (803) 261-5968 or at CJWLGrants@hotmail.com. The League office is not staffed; therefore, proposals are only accepted via mail.

Celebrating 100 days of school with donation

The children of Camden First Baptist Church's kindergarten and childcare collected 700 items of food to donate to Christian Community Ministries in honor of being in school 100 days.

The Pitchforks, South Carolina Heart Gallery opens at FAC Friday

The music of the Pitchforks of Duke University, a nationally acclaimed collegiate a cappella group, and a past winner of the SoJam Southeast Collegiate A Cappella Festival, are returning to the Wood Auditorium of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) for a one-night performance on Friday. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, military and seniors. This concert is made possible by Bob Sheheen. Also opening on Friday is the month-long special exhibit of the South Carolina Heart GalleryTM.

Cookin’ For A Cure to start Friday

The Aloha team is ready to kick off "Cookin' For A Cure" -- a fund raiser for Kershaw County Relay For Life. Northcutt to represent American Legion Post 17 in Oratorical Contest

Post 17 contest chairman Richard Lackey congratulates Daniel Northcutt as post-level scholarship winner of the American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. Northcutt, a home-schooled junior, will represent Post 17 at the Zone Four contest to be held in Camden Feb. 19. The winners of the four zone contests will compete at the state level. State winners earn a trip to Indianapolis to vie for the national title which carries an $18,000 scholarship award.

Junior Leadership Kershaw County students received a course in formal dining etiquette from cotillion facilitator Sara Fakoury during a recent session hosted by the Millpond Steakhouse in Boykin. FAC brings ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ to stage Thursday

Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" comes to life on the stage of the Wood Auditorium at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) Thursday at 8 p.m. "To Kill A Mockingbird" runs through Sunday. Fred J. Florian and Pearl Polinski Florian of Camden Celebrated 60 years of marriage Nov. 20. The couple married in 1954 at St. Hilary's Catholic Church in Washington, Pa. They have five sons: Fred. M, Tony, Robert, Bill and Chris. The couple has four grandchildren: Derick, Thomas, Kayla and Rachel.

Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. They have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: James, Sheena, Joy, Jazmin, Asha, Kier and Izaiah. The couple plans to celebrate the special occasion with their children and grandchildren at a later date.

Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
