Merry Christmas from the McCaskills

Robert and Dianne McCaskill's home in Bethune has quickly become a tourist attraction in the small town after lighting their yard for Christmas. The two have been decorating their home for the past 35 years.

County students compete in Christmas Card Contest

The results of the Kershaw County Recreation Department annual Christmas Card Contest sponsored by First Palmetto Savings Bank are in. All schools participating were combined (by each grade), for the over-all cash prize winners. All winners and honorable mentions are on display at the First Palmetto Savings Bank on East DeKalb Street. These cards may be picked up at the Recreation Department office any time after Dec. 30. Practice fire safety during the holiday season

As the holiday season approaches, there is an increased excitement about adorning our homes with the traditional decorations of Christmas trees, ornaments and garlands. Holiday decorations, as beautiful as they are, can also be an added home fire hazard. Statistics provided by the National Fire Protection Association reveal that a candle fire in the home is reported to a fire department every 30 minutes and each year, fire departments respond to roughly 260 structure fires caused by Christmas trees.

Richard Kirkland ceremony to be held Sunday afternoon

Camden Garden Club plans to ‘deck the halls’ for Monday meeting

The Camden Garden Club will hold its next meeting on Monday at the home of Dr. Richard Bell. This will be the "Holiday Tea and Celebration of Membership." It is sure to be one of the best meetings of the year. Not only will everyone be in a joyful and festive mood but the term "Deck The Halls" will not be taken lightly. Historic Camden takes visitors back to past during annual colonial Christmas celebration

Although it's recorded that in 1759 George Washington purchased such exotic sounding toys as "bird on Bellows, turnabout Parrot, Prussian Dragoon, and Man Smoaking," mostly the southern colonial Christmas season was a celebration for grown ups. It was a time of merriment and of thanks; a season of feasts, parties, hunts, horse races, cock fights, balls and visiting, highlighted by church services, mainly Church of England, and special customs.

Blaney Principal Ed Yount dresses up as promised

Blaney Elementary's Principal, Mr. Ed Yount, is a man of his word. He challenged Blaney's teachers and students to raise $1500 for the United Way during the first week of school, and if the challenge was met, he would come to school dressed as a woman. As of Friday, August 22, $1530 was raised and Mr. Yount kept his promise by arriving on August 29th in costume.
