City council approves demolition funding resolution

At least eight more -- and possibly 10 -- blighted homes could be demolished in the coming weeks in Camden. Tuesday evening, Camden City Council unanimously passed a resolution authorizing the city to advance $100,000 to the Santee-Lynches Regional Development Corporation (S-LRDC). That money will help the S-LRDC -- an arm of the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments (COG) -- close on the final phase of blighted homes identified as part of Camden's participation in the Neighborhood Initiative Program (NIP).

City breaks ground for tennis complex

Fifty or so people showed up to a cleared section of land between south Campbell and Gordon streets to officially break ground on the city of Camden's new tennis complex Tuesday afternoon. The 4 p.m. ceremony featured Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford, other members of city council, city staff, architects, contractors and others using golden-colored shovels to break up a mound of dirt at the 12-acre site north of York Street.

Tenth annual Clinic Classic to run April 29

The tenth annual Clinic Classic will take place Saturday, April 29. This event promotes physical activity for both youth and adults, as well as benefits for Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County. This USTAF certified course winds through Camden's Historic district. It begins and ends at the clinic located at 110-C East DeKalb Street, behind the United Way.
