Midlands Gives helps FAC, others

On May 6, seven Kershaw County nonprofit organizations participated in Midlands Gives, a 24-hour online giving campaign sponsored by the Central Carolina Community Foundation. A total of 150 nonprofit organizations from nine counties in the Midlands participated in the fundraising event. Kershaw County ranked fourth highest in raising donations with a total of $13,779 and 136 donors by the end of the 24-hour period.

Water rates going up in Bethune

Bethune residents who receive water service from the town will soon see a rate increase. Bethune Town Council announced the rate increase at its May meeting on Thursday. Councilman Don Witham reported the town's water rates are lower than other water providers in the area and the added money is needed for necessary repairs to the town's water tank and delivery system.

Kershaw County charities to participate in Midlands Gives

Seven Kershaw County nonprofits will participate Tuesday in a 24-hour online giving campaign called Midlands Gives. The Central Carolina Community Foundation is using Midlands Gives to raise money and awareness for 150 area charities.

DHEC's answers about Palmetto Utilities request

When Stan Jones, president of Palmetto Utilities, recently sought Kershaw County Council's support for a permit to discharge treated wastewater into Spears Creek, council members left with a number of unanswered questions. That was because the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) did not send a representative to a council workshop to answer some of those questions.

Kershaw County Council considers new budget

Users of Kershaw County's recreation facilities and programs may soon have to pay more for the privilege if Kershaw County Council passes a proposed budget presented at a special workshop Tuesday evening. County Administrator Vic Carpenter said the proposed budget is balanced without a tax increase.

KCC provides property for new Lugoff playground

Thanks to a unanimous vote by Kershaw County Council, a modern, state-of-the-art play area will soon become a reality in the West Wateree area. A group of concerned parents presented a proposal to council at its meeting Tuesday. Laurie Carpenter, Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter's wife, spoke on behalf of the West Wateree Community Playground Project.

Sewer utility seeks county council approval for permit

An Elgin-based wastewater treatment utility is hoping Kershaw County Council will sign off on a permit request filed with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to allow the discharge of treated sewage into nearby Spears Creek. The matter was the only item on the agenda of a special workshop meeting held after Tuesday's regular council meeting.

The Kershaw County Council meets in a regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow night. First on the agenda are two public presentations, one by Motorola regarding E-911 texting services. The other is a presentation by Laurey Carpenter on the West Wateree Community Playground project.

Bethune clerk receives pay raise

Bethune Town Council approved a 5 percent pay raise for Town Clerk Gayle Rogerson during its meeting Thursday. The unanimous vote came following an executive session at the end of the meeting. Mayor Charles McCoy said Rogerson has a lot of responsibility at town hall.

‘Like ducks to water’

A group of Kershaw County children have learned to swim this week, thanks to a partnership between the Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department (KCPRD) and First Baptist Church (FBC) of Camden. Patty Rose is the director of urban missions for FBC and said she became aware of the need for the swim lessons when kids in her program attended a pool party.

County council revising procurement code

KCC holding public hearing on joint industrial park

Kershaw County Council will hold a public hearing on and consider third and final reading of an ordinance approving the development of a joint county industrial park with Chesterfield County. The public hearing and consideration of the ordinance are scheduled for council's meeting Tuesday evening.
