The Colonels Creek Boating Access Area in Ridgeway, on Lake Wateree will be closed for approximately one week beginning June 9 to allow for necessary paving repairs to the parking area.

Taxes increasing for LFD property owners

Property owners in the Lugoff Fire District (LFD) will see an increase in their taxes after Kershaw County Council unanimously approved the district's proposed fiscal year 2015 budget at a special meeting Tuesday. The fiscal year begins July 1.

LF-R requests funding for new fire marshal

With Lugoff being one of the fastest growing areas of Kershaw County, Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) wants to be sure they keep up with that growth in its firefighting and prevention services. LF-R Chief Dennis Ray presented information to Kershaw County Council at its meeting Tuesday, asking for approval of the LF-R's Fiscal Year 2015 budget. The proposal includes a 2-mil tax increase to fund the hiring of one additional firefighter who would also serve as the Lugoff Fire District's (LFD) fire marshal. The current millage rate for the district is 29.4.

Asking humanity to consider its impact on nature

Two Kershaw County naturalists, Josh Arrants and Austin Jenkins, will join forces with conservation photographer Clay Bolt, forest wildlife ecologist Drew Lanham and renowned South Carolina naturalist Rudy Mancke for a screening and panel discussion of the film The Lost Bird Project, May 31. Arrants, Bolt, Lanham and Mancke will be part of the panel; Jenkins will serve as moderator.

School district representatives asked Kershaw County Council for 4.1 mils in funding for the upcoming school year. Kershaw County Board of School Trustees Chairwoman Mara Jones and Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Chief Finance Officer Donnie Weeks made the request during a presentation to council Tuesday evening on the district's annual budget.

Midlands Gives helps FAC, others

On May 6, seven Kershaw County nonprofit organizations participated in Midlands Gives, a 24-hour online giving campaign sponsored by the Central Carolina Community Foundation. A total of 150 nonprofit organizations from nine counties in the Midlands participated in the fundraising event. Kershaw County ranked fourth highest in raising donations with a total of $13,779 and 136 donors by the end of the 24-hour period.

Water rates going up in Bethune

Bethune residents who receive water service from the town will soon see a rate increase. Bethune Town Council announced the rate increase at its May meeting on Thursday. Councilman Don Witham reported the town's water rates are lower than other water providers in the area and the added money is needed for necessary repairs to the town's water tank and delivery system.
