Former Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Capt. David Thomley is dropping his lawsuit against Sheriff Jim Matthews. Thomley lost the Republican nomination to Matthews in 2010, who went on to be elected sheriff in that year's general election. Thomley lost again to Matthews this July when the sheriff beat him in the Republican primary and there were no Democratic contenders.

The president of the University of South Carolina's (USC) Lancaster campus offered Kershaw County Council a look at what the school has to offer and improvements being made there. USC-Lancaster President Dr. Walt Collins addressed council during its meeting Tuesday.

Radiate Church will kick off its third annual "Cover Columbia" event on Sunday. During that week, church members will perform random acts of kindness along with community service in the Midlands, including Kershaw County.
A new ordinance that would have given Kershaw County the authority to demolish uninhabitable dwellings failed to pass third and final reading Tuesday by Kershaw County Council on a 3-4 vote. First and second readings of the ordinance, patterned after state law, passed unanimously in previous meetings.
Kershaw County Probate Judge Harriett Pierce said it currently is illegal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in South Carolina and, therefore, she is bound to follow the law. Marriage licenses are obtained from each county's probate judge.
The Kershaw County Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee reported making progress by virtue of identifying a particular problem area in one of the unincorporated areas of the county. Kershaw County Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. formed the committee in July after council dropped a proposed ordinance to regulate firearms. The committee's goal is to write a new draft ordinance that would honor the rights of gun owners while protecting public safety. Tucker said he hoped the committee would draft such an ordinance by Nov. 15.
Kershaw County recently received a $500,000 grant from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (SCRIA). The money will be used to complete a water line to Governor's Hill Industrial Park, according to Kershaw County officials.
Kershaw County Council meets Tuesday, with public hearings on, and third and final readings of, four ordinances which affect county planning and zoning on the agenda. The matters in question all passed their first two readings unanimously.
