Local officials criticize SCBCB report

Are government agencies funded by tax dollars in Kershaw County in the red? Citizens might have thought so based on a November 2013 report issued by the S.C. Office of Budget and Control Board (SCBCB). However, area officials say the report is not as simple as it appears and doesn't paint an accurate financial picture.

A home for the holidays

No plans for county-owned Greenwood parcel

Kershaw County currently has no plans to develop or otherwise use a 122-acre piece of property associated with Liberty Hill Farms the county controls. The Conservation Fund, a national non-profit dedicated to preserving natural resources, recently purchased a more than 3,500-acre site once known as the Singleton Creek Tract from Greenwood Communities and Resorts Inc. for $9.187 million.

Rec Notes: Volleyball league for beginners

The Kershaw County Parks & Recreation announces registration for its Instructional Volleyball League. The league will be for beginners and is open for girls ages 8 and up. Girls will learn basic volleyball skills and be introduced to rules and game play scenarios.

County audit: FY 2013 a 'good year'

Kershaw County experienced a "good year" from a financial standpoint in Fiscal Year 2013, according to results of an audit presented to Kershaw County Council during its meeting Tuesday. Both Chairman Gene Wise and Councilman Jimmy Jones were absent; Vice Chairman Stephen Smoak presided over the meeting.

Boykin to celebrate parade’s 20th anniversary

The town of Boykin will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its annual Christmas parade at 2 p.m. Dec. 15. The parade is a yearly family-friendly celebration that brings community members together to have fun and get into the Christmas spirit. Coaches may be able to serve on rec commission

Kershaw County citizens who are currently coaching teams through the county's recreation department can now serve on the county's Recreation Advisory Commission. The change is a step closer to becoming official following a unanimous first reading vote of an amendment to the ordinance establishing the commission in the first place.

NRCS providing financial assistance to landowners

State Conservationist Ann English announced a prioritized funding sign up deadline for financial assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The deadline is December 20.

UWKC’s Day of Caring visits 23 sites

United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) volunteers gathered Thursday to serve the Camden community on its annual Day of Caring. Around 100 volunteers dedicated their time at a total of 23 sites across the county. The day began at Food for the Soul, where volunteers were energized with a hearty breakfast before heading out to their designated sites.
