David West takes office as county coroner

There's a new leader in the Kershaw County Coroner's Office, with Tuesday evening's swearing in ceremony for Coroner David West. West is no newcomer to the office, as he served as deputy coroner for several years under coroners Tommy Horton and recently retired Johnny Fellers. West ran unopposed for the job in 2014 after Fellers announced his intention to retire.

McDowell Road bridge replacement starts Monday

Monday, a S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) contractor will begin replacing McDowell Road bridge, one of only 90 in the state being replaced as part of a special state-federal program funded under S.C. Act 98.

Recreation Dept. Volleyball league open for registration

The Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department will host an instructional volleyball league. The league is for beginners and is open for girls ages 8 and up. Registration dates are until December 23. The registration fee is $40 and includes a shirt. The first practice will be January 7, 3:45 p.m. at the City Arena. Camden hosts statewide recreation conference

For the first time, Camden recently hosted the S.C. Recreation and Parks Association's annual board retreat, Dec. 4 and 5. Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Director Joe Eason said the retreat is usually held in Charleston, but the association chose Camden because of its central location and hospitality.

County helping to pay for Bethune water tower repairs

Bethune's work to repair and refurbish the town's aging water tower took a big step toward being completed Thursday when Kershaw County Councilman Tom Gardner presented Bethune Town Council a $33,000 check from the county.

KCC approves negotiations for KershawHealth-Capella/MUSC deal

During a special called meeting Thursday, Kershaw County Council approved the KershawHealth Board of Trustees' decision to draft a letter of intent concerning a deal between the county's public healthcare system and a partnership comprised of Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

County council says goodbye to Smoak, Wise

Kershaw County Council bade farewell to a councilman and its chairman at its last regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. Council normally would have a second meeting this month, but cancelled it due to the Dec. 23 date falling so close to Christmas.

County to offer economic expansion incentives

Kershaw County Council will consider Tuesday providing financial incentives to Hengst Inc. to continue with an $8.5 million expansion expected to create 20 new jobs. The proposal is on council's agenda Tuesday night, council's only meeting for the month.

Santa coming to the Kershaw County Government Center

Santa Claus is coming to town, as the song goes, and children 12 and under can meet him in person and take a photo Thursday at the Kershaw County Government Center, 515 Walnut St., Camden. Santa will be in the upstairs administration lobby from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. Some of Santa's elves will also be there, helping out and collecting letters to Santa to be forwarded to the North Pole.
