Bethune Christmas Parade celebrates holiday spirit

Bethune looking forward to upcoming year

Special election for Mickle’s Kershaw County Council seat set for March 29

A special election to fill the District 1 Kershaw County Council seat recently vacated by Willie Mickle is set for March 29, according to County Voter Registration Director John Caughman. Caughman said if more than one person files for their party's nomination to fill the seat, a primary would be held on Feb. 9. If necessary, a runoff would be held Feb. 23.

Discussion tonight on filling Mickle’s KCC seat

Elgin disaster recovery center closing Saturday

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster recovery center inside the Blaney Fire Department on U.S. 1 in Elgin will close at 3 p.m. Saturday. Despite the Blaney center's closing, Kershaw County victims of October's storms and flooding can still sign up for individual assistance through Jan. 4, 2016. They can also obtain in-person assistance by traveling to disaster recovery centers in Columbia, Bishopville or Sumter.

Deadline extended for individual FEMA assistance

Gov. Nikki Haley announced Monday her request for a 30-day extension of the registration period for individual assistance from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been granted.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Prayer Vigil

On November 17, the United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) hosted a Candlelight Vigil at Hampton Park in Camden to recognize Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. During the week of Nov. 15-21, various events were held to bring awareness of hunger and homelessness in the community. Sistercare provides services for women in Kershaw County

South Carolina currently ranks first for incidents of domestic violence against women. Domestic violence victims often need legal and emotional support to get through an abusive relationship. Sistercare, a partner agency of the United Way of Kershaw County, is an organization which provides support for women and their children in Kershaw County who are in a situation of domestic violence.
