USC-Lancaster dean to address KCC

Dr. Walt Collins, dean of the University of South Carolina-Lancaster, will make a presentation to Kershaw County Council during its meeting Tuesday night. Collins has appeared before other county councils in the region to explain the benefits of having the university accessible to residents of Lancaster, Kershaw, Chesterfield, Chester and York counties.

Read Across America needs volunteers for Feb. 28 event

Read a book, make a difference in a child's life. The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Partners in Education will conduct an annual Read Across America event Friday, Feb. 28. The two organizations are seeking volunteers to go to Kershaw County's 11 elementary schools that morning to read Dr. Seuss books to students.

Jordan joins local Clemson Extension team

Jackie Jordan recently joined the Clemson Extension as its area horticulture agent, bringing a wealth of experience to the role. Jordan's focus is in commercial and specialty crops in Kershaw, Fairfield and Richland counties. She works with farmers who grow fruits and vegetables, with landscapers working on yards and public greenery and with gardening specialists working with fields and golf courses.

KCC eyeing short agenda

Kershaw County Council will hold its second January meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The relatively short agenda will begin with a quarterly update from the KershawHealth Board of Trustees. Another presentation by the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees originally scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed until February, according to County Administrator Vic Carpenter.

Heavy rain causes traffic woes, flooding concerns

With steady rainfall and occasional heavy downpours Friday and Saturday, officials in Kershaw County reported traffic problems and concerns about flooding along area rivers and Lake Wateree. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported 3.55 inches of rain measured Friday and Saturday at a weather station 4.2 miles northeast of Camden.

Bethune needs to refurbish, repaint water tower

Proposals to refurbish and repaint Bethune's water tower dominated Bethune Town Council's first meeting of the new year Thursday. The evening also marked the first meeting for new Mayor Charles McCoy and new councilmen Don Witham and John Fulmer. The meetings also marked the first to be held at the Bethune Recreation Center rather than Bethune Town Hall.
