Senators Vincent Sheheen and Greg Gregory, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and The Conservation Fund joined other state and local officials, community members and private partners to celebrate the completion of a major effort to conserve more than 14 miles of Lake Wateree shoreline in Kershaw and Lancaster Counties.
Elgin Town Council continued to discuss the purchase of a business module with Nicholson Business System at Tuesday's night council meeting. The module would provide services such W2 bank reconciliation, business licenses, building permits and accounting services. Several municipalities in the state currently use the system for town business.
Kershaw County Council unanimously voted to approve a resolution for the county to spend $93,000 in partnership with Duke Energy to pave Tail Race Road, which is currently owned by the county. Duke Energy will pay approximately 1 million dollars to pave the road.
The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) is seeking financial support from the community after having one of its transitional housing programs, New Day on Mill, defunded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The cut in funds also affected similar housing programs in Aiken and Orangeburg Counties and has affected funding of other UWKC programs.
With reports of alligator encounters in the news -- most recently with a horrifying attack at a Florida Disney resort which resulted in the death of a toddler – some Kershaw County residents have expressed concerns about the huge reptiles.
Kershaw County Council will hold a special work session from 3 to 5 p.m. July 26 to receive information about and discuss a request from Palmetto Utilities of Richland County to increase its discharge into Spears Creek in Kershaw County.
Kershaw County Council will take up second reading of an ordinance tonight which, if passed on a later third and final reading, would create a joint industrial/business park with Chesterfield County. Any tax revenues collected by Kershaw County from operations in the park would fund "improvements, operating and maintenance expenses" at Woodward Field. The field serves as the county's airport.
The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) denied a request from Duke Energy to extend its recently acquired 40-year license to control the Catawba River by an additional 10 years. FERC's order, published Monday, keeps Duke's license at the 40-year mark instead of 50, as the power company requested. Duke Energy controls the Catawba River chain, which includes the Wateree River down to Kershaw County's dam on Lake Wateree.
Kershaw County Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution which would allow Kershaw County to collaborate with the South Carolina Association of Counties (SCAC) to collect debts from residents of Kershaw County. The vote came during council's June 28 meeting.
