On Sept. 11, volunteers from across Kershaw County will participate in the second annual Day of Caring. The Day of Caring is sponsored by the United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) and serves charitable organizations, schools and public organizations in the county.

KCC passes tower amendment on first reading

Kershaw County Council took the first step towards amending a county ordinance regulating communications towers at its meeting Tuesday. Council unanimously passed first reading of the amendment, which was discussed at council's Aug. 12 meeting.

Kershaw County Amateur Radio club hosting classes

The Kershaw County Amateur Radio club will have a series of classes about amateur radio open to licensed and unlicensed enthusiasts. The classes will run September 10, 17 and 24 Wednesday evenings at 7-9 p.m. in the Band Room on the Camden Military Academy grounds.

Firearms Discharge Committee discusses issues

The newly-formed Kershaw County Firearms Discharge Committee met Monday and took the first steps toward crafting a compromise ordinance that could satisfy gun enthusiasts as well as property owners with concerns about firearms being used in their neighborhoods.

Bethune police chief gets pay raise

Newly-hired Bethune Police Chief Joey Cobb received some good news at Bethune Town Council's meeting Thursday. After a brief executive session discussion near the end of the meeting, council unanimously voted to give Cobb a $500 a year pay raise and provide him with a cell phone paid for by the town. The raise brings the part-time chief's annual pay to $16,000.

Repairing the bridges of Kershaw County - Part 2 of 2

There are 21 bridges that cross bodies of water in Kershaw County owned and, therefore, maintained by the county. Of those, 19 need some level of repair or need to be replaced. In addition, there are two other bridges that are out-of-service that also need to be replaced.

Palmetto Utilities withdraws permit application

A Richland County wastewater treatment utility company has withdrawn a permit application to discharge treated sewage into a Kershaw County creek.

Repairing the bridges of Kershaw County - Part 1 of 2

Drive about 20 miles north of Camden on Flat Rock Road and turn right onto McDowell Road. A little ways down -- a couple of tenths of a mile, maybe -- and the road crosses Little Flat Rock Creek. Not everyone can cross the bridge there, however. Sign posted at both ends of the bridge read "Load Notice: Weight Limit 5 tons per axle, 7 tons gross."

Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee to meet Monday

A meeting of the newly-formed Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in Conference Room 190 at the Kershaw County Government Center, 515 Walnut St. in Camden. Kershaw County Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. said the committee was formed after a meeting July 16 was held to discuss firearms usage in the county.

The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) hosted its annual Industrial Luncheon on Wednesday to gear up for this year's upcoming financial campaign. UWKC's Day of Caring on Sept. 11 will mark the official kickoff to the 2014-2015 financial campaign.
