Transitional housing a solution for KC homeless, leaders say

A U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) count of the country's homeless will now be conducted annually to maintain year-to-year numbers. United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) President Donny Supplee said, however, that he "doesn't put stock in the count."

KCC rejects KH EMS funding request

Kershaw County Council voted, 4-3, to reject a request Tuesday to take over an average $846,000 annual emergency medical services (EMS) deficit from KershawHealth. During a presentation to council at Tuesday's meeting, KershawHealth President and CEO Donnie Weeks and Vice President and COO/CFO Mike Bunch said the healthcare organization has experienced a five-year loss of $4.22 million from EMS operations alone.

Array of services available for county’s homeless, others

Although only 50 people in Kershaw County took the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's homeless count survey (HUD), Food for the Soul (FFTS) and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church serve lunch to almost 100 people, separately, on a daily basis.

City Council to consider funding for business

City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The agenda for the meeting includes a presentation from the Carolina Motorsports Park regarding their submission of a list of funding proposals for staff to consider. The proposal includes the 2014 Rotax Grand National Kart Race for consideration in the fiscal year 2013-14 budget. The request is for $24,000 to cover track rental and corner worker fees. KershawHealth to approach KCC for funding

At Kershaw County Council's meeting Tuesday, April 9, Council will be approached by the KershawHealth Board of Trustees regarding the funding of the EMS Financial Operations. Concluding council's meeting on March 26, Councilman Jimmy Jones shared his thoughts on KershawHealth's request for funding from the county. Jones questions the management of KershawHealth and why taxpayer's funds should go towards funding which was previously covered by the hospital's own budget. KershawHealth's funding request will be for County Council to provide funding for the healthcare organization's EMS deficit and ongoing capital expenses beginning in July.

Homelessness still an issue despite low count

In 2012, South Carolina ranked No. 13 in the nation for food hardship, according to statistics provided by Harvest Hope Food Bank of Columbia. Santee-Lynches workforce investment board donates laptops to Kershaw County Library

Santee-Lynches Workforce Investment Board recently purchased three laptops for use by patrons of the Kershaw County Library Camden Branch. The Camden Library currently has fourteen public computers. Last year, public computers in the Camden Library were used for over 55,000 sessions. A survey of public computer users suggests that approximately 40 percent of these sessions were related to jobs or education.

Deadline for United Way funding April 30

The United Way of Kershaw County held a partner agency meeting on March 28 for interested nonprofit agencies wishing to be considered for funding decisions from United Way for 2014/15. Nonprofits must provide direct services to Kershaw County in the category of social services.

Kershaw County business leader honored by Dept. of Commerce

Joe Sexton was recently honored as an Ambassador for Economic Development by the Department of Commerce as part of South Carolina's Industry Appreciation Week. The ceremony took place in Columbia on March 19 on the grounds of the Governor's mansion and highlighted 47 individuals from 46 counties for their exceptional efforts to bolster community and economic development activities in South Carolina.

Audit finds good financial health for Kershaw County

Kershaw County is in good financial condition, according to the annual audit of the county books by the accounting firm Sheheen, Hancock & Godwin. The firm's Mark Wood presented the audit summary at Kershaw County Council's meeting Tuesday. Wood said the audit was completed earlier than usual this year at the county's request so it would be concluded before newly-elected Council Chairman Julian Burns and Councilman Dennis Arledge take office in January.
