First appointments to penny sales tax commission

Kershaw County Council unanimously voted Tuesday to appoint three county residents to the Capital Projects Sales Tax Commission. Members of council voted to choose Sherwood "Woody" Cleveland, Ray McElveen and Don Terrell to serve on the commission, which was created March 27. Council Vice Chairman Sammie Tucker Jr. introduced plans for the creation of the committee during council's March 13 meeting in order to investigate a possible 1-cent tax for capital projects.

County sets tourism director qualifications

The call has gone out for Kershaw County and the city of Camden's new tourism director. Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter said a job description has been prepared and the position is being advertised across South Carolina. Camden and Kershaw County announced plans to create the new position during a Feb. 9 county council work session.

Jones: Gary shouldn't chair rec committee

Kershaw County Councilman Jimmy Jones attempted to have fellow Councilman Bobby Gary removed as chairman of council's recreation committee during a work session Thursday. Jones' effort was blocked by Council Chairman Gene Wise after County Attorney Ken DuBose clarified the rules by which the public must be notified of and allowed to attend committee meetings.
