Matthews hit with 3rd $2 million lawsuit

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews got the news just a few hours before participating in a press conference about a serial robber Monday. A former Kershaw County Sheriff's Office victims advocate, Barbara Jones, is suing him for defamation of character, seeking $2 million in actual and punitive damages.

Jones reacts to Patriots controversy

Kershaw County Councilman Jimmy Jones took time during council's meeting Tuesday to denounce what some have deemed controversial actions by Jeff Mattox, co-chair of the Kershaw County Republican Party. Jones said the local Republican Party has been "hijacked by anti-government extremists" and that "free speech doesn't mean irresponsible speech."

King Haiglar post office may close

Camden's King Haiglar post office may be on the chopping block. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is looking to cut back on costs. The King Haiglar branch, located in Dusty Bend and which opened in April 2000, is listed as one of 3,700 post offices nationwide under review for closure.

Increased property values lead to petition

With the economy in historically bad shape, how is it possible for property values in the county to be increasing? That question led someone to circulate a petition at Camden businesses calling for the county assessor's office to withdraw all increases in property values. The petition states that the reassessed values are contrary to reality and that property values have decreased across the nation and in the county.

City seeks county's help with rec plan

The city of Camden has asked Kershaw County for financial support should a new recreation center be built in the city. County Council Chairman Gene Wise noted at Thursday's work session that the county's involvement was requested in a letter from Camden Mayor Jeffrey Graham. Wise said he informed Graham the county would have to engage in an impact study before officially getting involved.

KCC moves forward with new administrator

New Kershaw County Administrator Victor Carpenter kicked off his first work session with Kershaw County Council Thursday with a report on the transition into his new role. Carpenter said his first week did not involve a lot of policy decisions, but provided a great opportunity to meet people. He also noted that Frank Broom, who has served as interim administrator, kept him busy.

Bethune clerk receives pay raise

Bethune Town Council approved a 5 percent pay raise for Town Clerk Gayle Rogerson during its meeting Thursday. The unanimous vote came following an executive session at the end of the meeting. Mayor Charles McCoy said Rogerson has a lot of responsibility at town hall.
