Thomley drops lawsuit against sheriff

Former Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Capt. David Thomley is dropping his lawsuit against Sheriff Jim Matthews. Thomley lost the Republican nomination to Matthews in 2010, who went on to be elected sheriff in that year's general election. Thomley lost again to Matthews this July when the sheriff beat him in the Republican primary and there were no Democratic contenders.

Firearms committee to report to county council

Kershaw County Council may soon consider a newly-written firearms discharge ordinance. The county's Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee will make a presentation during council's meeting Tuesday.

The Kershaw County Recreation Department along with SAFE Federal Credit Union and Kimbrell's Furniture will host Trick or Treat Trail, a "Boostastic time for the whole family" today from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rhame City Arena located on 517 Broad Street. A new ordinance that would have given Kershaw County the authority to demolish uninhabitable dwellings failed to pass third and final reading Tuesday by Kershaw County Council on a 3-4 vote. First and second readings of the ordinance, patterned after state law, passed unanimously in previous meetings.

No same-sex marriage licenses being issued in Kershaw Co.

Kershaw County Probate Judge Harriett Pierce said it currently is illegal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in South Carolina and, therefore, she is bound to follow the law. Marriage licenses are obtained from each county's probate judge.
