Candidates, others clash with Bethune council

A candidate for mayor and several residents in Bethune clashed with Bethune Town Council at its most recent meeting, held Sept. 9. According to a recording provided by a town resident who attended the meeting, Charles McCoy began speaking during the meeting's public forum by noting that "everyone knows" he's running against current Mayor Carlisle Davis in November's election. He was critical of the way both Davis and other members of council have misrepresented his goals if elected.

Lions begin candy sales

The Lion Club of Camden will begin with its candy drive, to benefit needy citizens of South Carolina, this week. Pictured (from left to right) are Roger Smoak, Outreach Leader of Camden's Lion club and Phil McGee, Lion Club secretary receiving their first donation from Camden Mayor Tony Scully. Lion club members will be present at local stores on October 4th, 5th,11th,12th and the 19th. Mikota is new Santee-Lynches COG director

Dr. Michael Mikota recently became the new executive director of the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments (COG). The COG is one of 10 regional districts which make up the South Carolina Association of Regional Councils. Regional councils are voluntary associations of local governments formed in accordance with state law to provide a structured method of intergovernmental coordination, cooperation and collaboration on a multi-jurisdictional level. The Santee-Lynches COG, established in 1971 and headquartered in Sumter County, the Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee and Sumter counties. County outlines plan for Bethune’s recycling center

A proposal to move a Kershaw County recycling center in Bethune will not take place for the moment, following a Sept. 12 public meeting with members of Kershaw County Council, Bethune Town Council and local citizens. Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter, Asst. Administrator Allan Trapp and county councilmen Tom Gardner and Sammie Tucker Jr. attended the meeting as did Mindy Spires-Miller of the Waste Management company.

County council tables cell tower amendment

Kershaw County Council Chairman Gene Wise decided to table a proposed amendment to an ordinance governing, among other things, the "fall zone" for, or distance between, cell towers. A public hearing on the matter drew nine speakers as council prepared to take up third and final reading of the amendment. Had the amendment been passed, it would have changed the distance between cell towers from 5,000 feet to 1,500 feet.

Public hearing on cell tower amendment Tuesday

Kershaw County Council will take up third and final reading of an ordinance amending the county's code of zoning and land development regulations concerning communication towers, antennas and the definition of a "fall zone." At its Sept. 10 meeting, council voted unanimously to pass second reading with a reminder from County Attorney Ken DuBose that Tuesday's meeting would would include a public hearing before the ordinance could go through third reading.

Post 203’s 62nd anniversary

American Legion Sanders Stoney Post No. 203 celebrated its 62nd Anniversary with Dr. Lonnie Randolph, president of the South Carolina NAACP as guest speaker. Joining Dr. Randolph on the program were Commander Evans Bush Jr., Post 203; Ms. Teresia Hayes, Department of South Carolina Junior Vice President and Unit 203 President; and the Rev. William Gaither, president of the Kershaw County NAACP.

United Way of Kershaw County hosts Day of Caring

Stephen Smoak and Pam Alderman and other associates of Savage, Royall and Sheheen L.L.P. volunteered to serve lunch to the community at Food for the Soul on Wednesday as part of the United Way of Kershaw County's Day of Caring. Many individuals and agencies throughout the county lended their support, as well. See page 10 of today's C-I for full coverage of the event.

KCC discusses, passes cell tower zoning amendment

Boland, Outen, Tidwell new KershawHealth trustees

Tuesday night, Kershaw County Council appointed Wayne Tidwell of Buffalo Township, and Eric Boland and Susan Outen of DeKalb Township to the KershawHealth Board of Trustees. The trio fill the seats of outgoing trustees Scott Ziemke, George Corbin and Donald Witham.
