‘Bethune is special’

A Bethune mayoral candidate and four of six candidates for Bethune Town Council seats appeared at a forum Tuesday night at the Bethune Women's Club. Many residents took the opportunity to hear the candidates' platforms and ask them questions.

Bethune purchases software for PD

Bethune Town Council voted unanimously to purchase computer software for the town's police department, currently consisting only of Police Chief Glen Davis. Council originally intended to discuss the software at its regularly scheduled meeting held Oct. 10, but chose to reschedule the meeting to Oct. 17 to give council members time to review the information regarding the new software.

County passes amended cell tower ordinance

Residents filled up the Kershaw County Council chamber Tuesday evening, even standing along a wall and in the Kershaw County Government Center's lobby. The reason: the anticipated third and final reading of an amended ordinance governing cell towers, updating the definition of a fall zone and how far apart cell phone towers can be placed.

Eight candidates on Bethune ballot

Eight candidates, including three incumbents, will be on the ballot Nov. 5 for the mayoral and two other seats on Bethune Town Council. A "meet the candidates" forum is slated for Oct. 29 at the Bethune Woman's Club where the candidates will gather to present platforms and answer residents' questions.

Cell tower amendment back on KCC agenda

Kershaw County Council will once again take up third and final reading of an ordinance to amend the county's code of zoning regarding cell towers, antennas and the definition of a fall zone. Council unanimously voted Oct. 8 to send the amendment back to its planning and zoning commission.

A woman who lives just outside the town limits of Bethune used Bethune Town Council's Oct. 10 meeting to apologize for speaking at council's September meeting.

Horton appointed to Southeast Board of Regents

Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF), has appointed Liz Horton, IOM, Executive Director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, to the Southeast Board of Regents. As a member of this Board, Horton will implement the policies created by Institute's National Board of Trustees.

Dr. George Kessler guest speaker for KC forest landowners association meeting

LWA: lake area needs more cell phone towers

The Lake Wateree Association (LWA) urged its members and other concerned citizens in an email to attend a Kershaw County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Monday to let commissioners know more cell phone towers are needed on the lake and in other rural areas of the county.

Kershaw County survey currently underway

As part of an effort for Kershaw County Council to better understand what residents are thinking, the county is currently conducting a countywide survey. County Administrator Vic Carpenter said the survey will include phone surveys as well as an online component.

Rec Notes -- October 11

Kershaw County Parks and Recreation, Kimbrell's Furniture and SAFE Federal Credit Union are sponsoring the Annual Trick-or-Treat Trail and invite organizations to participate. The event will be held on Thursday, October 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rhame City Arena, 517 Broad Street. Local businesses, agencies, and organizations are encouraged to participate by dressing in costume, decorating Halloween booths, and distributing treats, prizes and candy to the costumed children who participate.

Tower amendment back to planning and zoning

Kershaw County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to move an amendment regarding cell towers, antennas and fall zones back to the Kershaw County Planning and Zoning Commission. Council originally considered third and final reading of the amendment Sept. 24, but Chairman Gene Wise tabled it at that time following both public and council members' comments expressing concern about how close together cell phone towers might be in the future.
