Brother, sister killed in Thursday Lugoff shooting

A Lugoff woman and her brother from California died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head Thursday afternoon. Kershaw County Coroner David West identified the victims as Maliaka Truesdale, 36, who was living in the Bridle Ridge Apartments No. 307, 40 Boulware Drive, in Lugoff; and her brother, 38-year-old Hannasan McGhie, of Los Angeles, Calif. West said McGhie was visiting his sister. Both died of gunshot wounds to the head.

ATEC students learn skills at the Camden Fire Department

The Camden Fire Department (CFD) held its first Skills Day for the new Firefighter 1 Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC) program at the CFD's training grounds. Thirteen students from the Firefighter 1 program attended the five-hour class day. Covered subjects ranged from ladder rescues to fire attack and the growth stages of fire. Skills Day was led by ATEC Instructor Jeff Cooper; assistant instructors Chris Tidwell, Chris Jones and Scott Wiles; and members of the CFD.

Alert neighbor reports burglary in progress

Men plead guilty in Sandhills Bank robbery case

Two men arrested in June 2015 for the armed robbery of the Sandhills Bank branch in Bethune pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court. According to a press release from U.S. Attorney Beth Drake, Yancey Kevon Wilson and Randy Jones Jr., both 23, pleaded guilty to a variety of charges stemming from the robbery.

Boan graduates from FBI Academy

Camden Police Department Capt. Lee Boan graduated from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Academy on March 17. Boan studied at the academy for 10 weeks; his coursework covered topics such as legal issues for command-level officers, fitness in law enforcement, public speaking, critical incident leadership in crisis negotiations, essentials for law enforcement executives and a seminar in media and managing law enforcement image.

Thanks to grant, LF-R gets eight new AEDs

Sheriff gives $100,000 check to SCVAN

Every year, every county in South Carolina collects money from fines and assessments following court proceedings. A percentage of those funds are mandated by state law to be turned over to the state. In turn, South Carolina distributes a portion of that money back to the counties, including to sheriffs to be used to assist the many victims of crime.
