Nominations open for 2017 Deputy of the Year

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Foundation (KCSF) Board of Directors invites the public to submit nominations for the "2017 Kershaw County Sheriff's Office Deputy of the Year Award." The award recognizes a KCSO deputy who exhibits exemplary service to our county and citizens in the current calendar year. The KCSO winner will receive a $1,000 prize funded by anonymous supporters of the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office and the KCSF.

Auto break-in suspect gets probation after guilty pleas

One of three young men arrested in March for multiple motor vehicle break-ins in and around Camden pleaded guilty Oct. 12. According to online court records, Jonathan William Ray, 22, of Mount Hebron Road, Cassatt, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of larceny/motor vehicle break-in. A circuit court judge sentenced him to five years in prison, suspended to time served and four years probation. The judge also ordered Ray to obtain his GED and to undergo both substance abuse counseling and random drug and alcohol tests.

2-year-old dies in Cassatt collision

A 2-year-old Cassatt girl died Monday night from injuries sustained in a two-car collision a little after 6 p.m. at the intersection of Old Georgetown Road West and Robinson Town Road.

Ray leaving LF-R to be fire academy superintendent

Dennis Ray, who has led Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) since June 2010, will leave the agency to become the new superintendent of the S.C. Fire Academy and, thus, the chief of firefighting training for the state. Ray will also become the assistant state fire marshal for South Carolina. His last day with the LF-R will be Nov. 27. He will start his new work at the fire academy on Dec. 1.

Two arrested for meth, crack trafficking

On Oct. 17 at about 7:45 a.m., Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies executed a search warrant on a home in the 300 block of Smyrna Road near Elgin and arrested Devon Deshawn Jamison, 25, who lives at the home; and Theus Alpanchino Lawton Gillie, 30, who lives on Sunview Circle in Columbia. Deputies seizured of 6.4 ounces of methamphetamine, 2.7 ounces of crack cocaine, 9 grams of cocaine and 14 ounces of marijuana.

Deputies arrest New York murder suspect

At approximately 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies, detectives from the New York Police Department (NYPD) and U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force agents arrested Cortney Pitts, 26, of New York City, on charges stemming from an October 2015 murder in Bronx County, New York.

Woman pleads guilty to car break-ins

A 20-year-old woman pleaded guilty Monday to four of eight counts of breaking into motor vehicles a year ago. Kristina Danielle Lake, of Humphrey Drive, Columbia, pleaded guilty to those charges and an additional charge of grand larceny more than $10,000. Lake, one of five people the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested for the September 2016 break-ins, received a three-year sentence under the Youthful Offender Act, suspended upon 18 months probation with credit for 392 days served.
