Kershaw County residents are now provided better emergency response with the recent formation of the Special Operations Team, a cooperative effort between the Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Department and the Kershaw County Fire Service. The team specializes in accidents involving hazardous materials, unusual rescues and other unique situations. LF-R Battalion Chief Chris Spitzer said the 20 team members were handpicked from the best firefighters around the county and had to receive extra training for the situations they may encounter.
Westbound I-20 traffic was stop and go for several hours Friday after a one-car crash near mile marker 96 took the life of Lisa Marie Munn, 25, of Camden. The S.C. Highway Patrol reported Munn drove a 2007 Honda Acura onto the median between the westbound and eastbound lanes and struck a "low boy" trailer the patrol said was legally parked. The patrol reported Munn was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated and was dead at the scene.

The Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Department responded to a call of a two-vehicle collision around 9 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 601 in front of Pondish Construction. LF-R Chief Dennis Ray said in a press release a Ford F-150 pickup turned in front of a Pontiac sports car, which hit the truck on the right side. In May 2008, Nancy Watts, a constable who works for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), learned she had breast cancer. For many people, a cancer diagnosis is devastating news. It certainly came as a shock to Watts, who is one of the individuals who is tasked with serving civil papers for the KCSO's civil division. Watts' doctor recommended she undergo a mastectomy. Normally, a mastectomy requires the patient be out of work for eight weeks. In Watts' case, she came back after four weeks.
