Columbia man arrested, retired N.C. trooper’s weapon recovered

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested a Columbia man following a traffic stop the evening of April 16. According to a KCSO statement released Friday afternoon, James Carter, 21, of Columbia is charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of a stolen handgun.

BMPFD receives $60,000 FEMA grant

The Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department (BMPFD) recent received a $60,430 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The department will utilize this funding to upgrade portable radio equipment.

Stores cited for selling alcohol, tobacco to minors

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is citing seven convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations for selling either alcohol or tobacco to minors. The KCSO conducted Alcohol Enforcement (AET) compliance checks Monday on numerous stores as part of a continuing effort to keep such products out of the hands of Kershaw County minors.

Bethune dissolves police department

Bethune Town Council voted to dissolve the Bethune Police Department (BPD) at its March meeting after determining the town does not have enough money to hire a new police chief. Mayor Carlisle Davis said there are a number of police departments across the state who have one-man police departments that are being forced to completely shut their departments down. During the afternoon of April 4, two Kershaw County Sheriff's Office employees drove through the Patriots Landing parking area and observed a young man in his 4 wheel drive pickup truck spinning his tires and destroying the newly planted grass adjacent to the landing.

Bloodhound team apprehends two burglary suspects

April 5, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office arrested 18-year-old Austin Colvin from Lugoff and a 16- year-old juvenile, also from Lugoff, after they broke into the Lucky 7 convenience store on Highway 1 South in Lugoff.

Second arrest in fatal accident

A second arrest was made in the case of a fatal hit-and-run in Elgin on March 1. 26-year-old Jesus Corona Cabal, of Columbia, was charged with accessory after the fact for helping the driver involved in the hit and run "destroy" the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse that hit and killed Derk Lawrence Maricle of Lugoff, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said.
