Bethune man dies in fiery crash with log truck

A Bethune man died Tuesday morning when the SUV he was driving went out of control, collided with a logging truck and burst into flames on U.S. 1 at James West Road near Cassatt.

Sheriff wants to reform DUI laws

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says too many guilty driving under the influence (DUI) offenders go unpunished or "underpunished." The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCOS) regularly receives awards for enforcing South Carolina's DUI laws, but Matthews said the way those laws are written often end up with less than optimal outcomes in his mind.

Lightning causes house fire in Lugoff

A lightning strike to the roof of a Lachicotte Road, Lugoff home during a strong Sept. 4 thunderstorm started a fire, according to a Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) press release. LF-R crews responded to the fire around 11:40 p.m.

Camden, Lugoff firefighters set Fill the Boot record

The Camden Fire Department and Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) set a new record by raising more than $31,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Sept. 3-5. The two departments raised $31,116 during the three-day "Fill the Boot" campaign. According a to joint press release, the amount is the second highest raised in the state this year.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested two Cassatt men Sept. 1 after incriminating themselves in burglaries from the previous night. The arrests may clear up a number of burglaries from throughout Kershaw County.

‘Fill the Boot’ for MDA is this week

As Kershaw County enters the annual Labor Day weekend, it's also time for local fire departments to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Firemen in Camden and Lugoff took to the streets Thursday and are doing so again today and Saturday, holding a boot they hope to fill with donations from passing motorists.

CFD, LF-R Fill the Boot kickoff Tuesday

Members of the Camden Fire Department (CFD) and Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R), along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), will host a special event to kick off the firefighters' annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to continue a 60-year tradition of helping save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease in the Camden and Lugoff communities. The media event will be held at CFD headquarters next to Camden City Hall, 1000 Lyttleton St., Camden, on Tuesday at 11 a.m., according to a press release.

Back to school means back to work for KCSO dog Elsa

While school went back in session in Kershaw County this week, it was back to work for Elsa, a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) K-9 and her handler, Sgt. Mike Lyons. Lyons is the supervisor for the KCSO's school resource officers (SROs). Elsa is a 2-year-old German Shepherd donated to the KCSO by Beverly Conley of Blythewood in December 2013.
