New ambulances rolling in Kershaw County

Kershaw County emergency medical technicians Paul Taylor and Ethan Blackmon really like their new ambulance. Taylor, an advanced EMT originally from Elgin who returned to work in Kershaw County three years ago, and Blackmon, a part-time intermediate EMT who works full time for the Columbia Fire Department, have each served emergency medical teams for seven years.

KCSO is DUI Agency of the Year for fifth year

For the fifth consecutive year, The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is being recognized as the Agency of the Year for department with between 51 and 100 officers by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs. The award, presented during a ceremony Wednesday in Columbia, recognizes the KCSO for "excelling in the area of DUI arrests, DUI victim services, and under-age drinking programs in SC during 2015," according to a KCSO press release.

KCSO arrests couple for operating meth lab

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a Lugoff couple the evening of March 31 for allegedly operating a methamphetamine, or meth, lab in their home. According to a KCSO press release, deputies arrested David M. Gibson, 37, and Shannon Raye Smith, 36, both of Riverside Drive in Lugoff. The home is in a neighborhood near the intersection of U.S. 1 and Longtown Road. Deputies arrested the couple after KCSO narcotics investigators received information from citizens during the past month indicating the couple was producing meth in the home.

Back in mid-March, dispatchers sent Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) crews to INVISTA off U.S. 1 in Lugoff for a vehicle on fire behind one of the company's large industrial buildings.

The case of an 18-year-old Lugoff woman strangled to death by a male acquaintance in February 2014 was featured as a new episode of "On the Case with Paula Zahn" on the Investigation Discovery cable network. The episode, titled "Tracks of a Killer," aired Sunday at 10 p.m.

Man found guilty of incest sentenced to 30 years in prison

A 39-year-old man found guilty by a jury Friday of incest and criminal sexual conduct will spend the better part of 30 years in prison. A circuit court judge sentenced James Wayne Miller to consecutive 10- and 20-year sentences for sexually assaulting his own daughter for more than a year during 2011 and 2012. He will have to serve at least 85 percent of the 30 years before he is eligible to be released from prison.

Grand jury returns no-bill for Methe

The Kershaw County Grand Jury returned a no-bill on charges of voluntary manslaughter against Jimmy Joe Methe, the 49-year-old east Camden man arrested a month ago for fatally shooting 17-year-old Brandon Scott Spencer during what appeared to be an attempt to break into one of Methe's vehicles.
