One of four people charged in an April 2017 carjacking in Lugoff pleaded guilty recently to a federal charge and will spend the next seven years in a penitentiary.

Man charged with 15 counts of vandalism

The Camden Police Department (CPD) arrested a man Wednesday night after he reportedly admitted to committing 15 acts of vandalism over two nights at a dozen sites in downtown Camden. According to CPD incident reports, officers arrested Jordan Rasheed McKeever, 245, of Laurens Street, Camden.

Man broke into vehicles during worship services

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a county man for breaking into vehicles during worship services in the Westville area on Sunday.

CPD looking for missing child

Two-year-old Dakota Day Ray, is considered to be a missing child even though she is thought to be with her parents. Dakota is considered missing because her parents -- William Eugene Ray, 43; and Jessica Louise Ray, 36 -- allegedly obtained custody of her in violation of a safety plan put in place by the S.C. Department of Social Services' office in Kershaw County.

Orphaned and homeless - Part 2 of 2

Fourteen-year-old "J.M." ended up on the streets of Elgin for four months in 2015. In 2016, his attorneys, Deborah and Robert Butcher, filed a lawsuit on his behalf against the S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) claiming the agency's negligent actions not only deprived him of his Fourteenth Amendment right to due process, but placed him in danger and led to his becoming homeless.

Former city employee dies after house fire

A former city of Camden Department of Public Works employee, Barbara Currie, 72, of White Pines Circle, Camden, died Thursday from injuries suffered in a house fire on Saturday, March 31. According to a press release issued by Kershaw County Coroner David West, Currie died Thursday evening from carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation.

Orphaned and homeless - Part 1 of 2

At the age of 14, an orphan listed in court documents as "J.M." lived on the streets of Elgin for about four months, sleeping in abandoned cars, sheds and even a burnt-out home. On March 16, a jury awarded J.M., now 17, $150,000 in a judgment against the S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) concluding that the agency's negligent actions led to his ending up on the streets. The judgment came almost exactly two years after being filed in the Kershaw County Clerk of Court's office in March 2016.

Cup-related charges cut by more than half

The Camden Police Department (CPD) and its partner agencies issued summonses or arrested 43 people during March 31's 84th running of the Carolina Cup. That is a more than 50 percent drop from previous years, according to CPD Chief Joe Floyd.

Daughtery pleads guilty, gets probation

The last of three men arrested a year ago for a string of motor vehicle break-ins in and around Camden pleaded guilty to charges against him on March 19.

Firefighters respond to garage fire in Cassatt

Although it took a call for extra manpower, dozens of firefighters responded to a short dirt road off Cheraw Road in Cassatt to put out a fire at a large shed being used as an auto garage. Antioch Fire Chief Bryan Spitzer said he happened to be nearby when the call went out around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
