A Fire Fest fire safety checklist

In conjunction with this weekend's Fire Fest at Rhame Arena, the Camden Fire Department has released its 2013 Fire Prevention Checklist. Fire Fest, including the annual parade and many new features, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Organizers plan to honor the 90th anniversary of the Cleveland School Fire, which killed many people, but led to new building codes in South Carolina.

Fire fest will honor 90th anniversary of Cleveland School fire

The 18th Annual Camden/Kershaw County Fire Fest will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rhame Arena (517 Bull St.) in Camden. A part of this year's event will mark the 90th anniversary of the historic Cleveland School Fire -- a fire at a Camden-area school in 1923 that killed 77 people. Because of the Cleveland School Fire, the most deadly in state history, many laws, building codes, regulations, and ordinances have been passed across the nation to prevent this type of tragedy from ever happening again.

Man arrested after being forced off road by deputies

A Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputy forced a vehicle off the road Tuesday following a chase after the driver, Zachary Zaccone, 36, of Jacobs Mill Pond Road, Elgin, was allegedly involved in a hit and run in Kershaw County. Deputies found Zaccone to be intoxicated and placed him in the Kershaw County Detention Center charging him with DUI, failure to stop for a blue light, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest.

Lugoff Fire Dept. Explorer attends national camp

Christina Kirk, an Explorer assistant chief at the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) Explorer Post, recently attended a national firefighter training camp in Concord, N.H. Camp Fully Involved, is a physically challenging, aggressive, hands-on summer camp directed towards young women between the ages of 14-20 who are interested in exploring the career of firefighting. LF-R publishes results of wildfire protection survey

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) recently teamed up with the S.C. Forestry Commission (SCFC) on a 10-month district-wide survey of the wildfire potential among homes, businesses and industries protected by the department. Lugoff Fire-Rescue responds to apartment fire

Lugoff Fire-Rescue crews responded to the Sherwood Apartments in Lugoff on the evening of June 30 around 10:30 p.m. for a fire reported inside an unoccupied apartment by other people living at the complex. According to a LF-R statement released Thursday, Lugoff Ladder 10 and Rescue Engine 10 arrived to find smoke coming from a second floor apartment.
