Murder trial starts Monday

Almost exactly a year after a Bethune senior citizen lost his life over his moped, his accused killer is set to go to trial. Willie Thomas Starnes, 33, of Magnum Road Bethune, is charged with the Aug. 24, 2013, death of Alan Thomas Robinson, 67, also of Bethune. The trial is scheduled to begin Monday at the Kershaw County Courthouse.

Kershaw County residents, especially those in the fire service, are mourning the loss of retired Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Chief Steve McIntyre, 60, who passed away Sunday, Aug. 10. Current LF-R Chief Dennis Ray said McIntyre had encountered continuing medical issues over the past few years.

Heavy rains, lightning cause flooding, fires

At least 3 inches of rain fell in Kershaw County on Tuesday as about an hour-long storm brought heavy rains and frequent lightning strikes. Camden Public Works Director Tom Couch said a rain gauge at the city's parking lot measured 3.2 inches of rain Tuesday.

Prestage D.C. court appearance postponed

A Camden businessman accused of taking a loaded gun into a congressional office building in Washington, D.C., was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, but the District of Columbia U.S. Attorney's Office said the hearing has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 10 before Magistrate Judge Frederick Sullivan.

Lexington man dies in Lugoff motorcycle crash

A Lexington man died Thursday when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck in Lugoff. Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers said Steven Wayne Brabham, 43, died from blunt force trauma to the head as a result of the crash. The S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) reported Brabham was not wearing a helmet.

LF-R responds to SUV that fell off I-20 overpass

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) crews responded to U.S. 601 at I-20 in Lugoff for an overturned vehicle with entrapment at approximately 9 a.m. Monday. Battalion 1, Training 1, Rescue 10 and Service 10 responded to the scene to find a sports utility vehicle (SUV) overturned against a guard rail in the median.

Tip on marijuana plants leads to arrest for cocaine, weapons

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) narcotics investigators arrested a Camden man July 31, charging him with trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, manufacturing marijuana, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime.

Sheriff warns of teens sharing inappropriate photos online

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews is warning parents to be aware of their children's online activities, as photos of nude or semi-nude adolescents are being posted on the internet, then widely distributed. Matthews posted the following warning on the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Facebook page on Monday, under a headline that read "VERY IMPORTANT PARENTS BEWARE!!!"

Man accused of beating son rearrested

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a Camden man Aug. 1 for possession of a stolen handgun just days after being freed on a $20,000 bond for a charge of second-degree assault and battery. Deputies first arrested the man on July 26 for allegedly attacking his 12-year-old son with his fists and a flashlight. Online court records show the man was freed on bond on July 28.

Camden woman arrested for allegedly defrauding KCSD

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) says a woman with a special needs child defrauded the district out of approximately $151,000 during a three-year period. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) charged Malinda Wynette Johnson, 34, with "breach/obtain signature or property under false pretenses, value $10,000 or more," according to online court records.
