Mr. Bear goes to Camden...

Camden residents living along the 600 block of Lyttleton Street received a rude awakening Sunday morning after neighbors spotted a 250 pound black bear roaming around the neighborhood. Camden Police Chief Joe Floyd said 911 dispatchers first received word of the bear about 11:30 a.m. Sunday after getting phone calls from concerned citizens.

KCSO seizes 102 lbs. of marijuana during I-20 stop

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) traffic officers arrested Donald Wayne Gillham Jr., 45, of Sun City Center, Fla., after an officer stopped the 2012 Chevrolet he was driving on I-20 in Kershaw County and found 102 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his vehicle.

Long-time civil service chief retires from KCSO

Warren "Buddy" Moseley started working for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) in 1980 at the age of 28. After 32 years of service at the KCSO, Moseley retired June 27 from his position as captain of the Civil Division.

Electric cooperative warns members of scam

Lynches River Electric Cooperative (LREC) is warning members of a telephone scam targeting cooperative members. LREC representatives said another South Carolina electric cooperative has reported its members have received phone calls from an individual claiming to represent the cooperative. The member is told their bill is past due and asked to provide their credit card number for payment.

LFD discovers alligator after fighting fire

Members of the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) made a startling discovery while checking possible damage from an apartment fire June 18: a young American alligator. According to LFD Chief Dennis Ray, firefighters weren't even in the damaged unit at Lugoff's Lynwood apartment complex off Frenwood Lane when they found the alligator.

Wife in child sex abuse case posts bond

A Kershaw County woman accused of looking the other way as her husband sexually abused their two daughters for more than six years posted bond Wednesday. A magistrate set a cash surety bond at $30,000 for Kelly Browning, charged earlier this week by the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office with two counts of unlawful neglect upon a child.

Parents arrested in child sex abuse case

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested a Lugoff couple after learning that a man sexually abused his two daughters. According to a statement released to the press Monday afternoon, investigators arrested Michael Dwight Browning, 36, and his 33-year-old wife, Kelly Marie Browning. The KCSO said Michael Browning allegedly abused his daughters sexually, one when she was between the ages of 8 and 14, the other when she was between 7 and 9 years of age. A Lugoff man was arrested Wednesday, April 9 after Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies found equipment and supplies used to manufacture methamphetamine at his home. A KCSO report said Michael Dean Thompson, 25, 1759 Baughman Road was taken into custody after deputies paid a visit to the home after receiving information that Thompson had been making excessive purchases of pseudoephedrine, an over-the-counter cold remedy used to make methamphetamine.
