Near drowning averted at Kendall Lake

One day before an Elgin homeowner found 15-year-old Daven Williams dead in their swimming pool, a Camden man was transported -- alive -- to the hospital after nearly drowning in Kendall Lake. Camden Police Department (CPD) Chief Joe Floyd said the 35-year-old man had to be taken to the hospital after he tried to rescue his fiancé's flotation device.

Pine Grove Residential student found dead in swimming pool

A 15-year-old teen with a developmental disorder was found dead on Friday after he walked away from the school he attended in Elgin for the second time, according to authorities.

CMA hazing trial continues in Columbia

A federal jury is hearing testimony this week as the trial begins of a lawsuit brought against Camden Military Academy (CMA). In the trial's first days, attorneys for a former cadet have brought forward testimony and evidence they say show that, in 2008, other CMA students raped the then 13-year-old boy, according to news reports. The former cadet, listed in the lawsuit only as "JBC," is now 18.

KCSO to host S.T.A.R.S. summer camps for youth

For the third year in a row, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office will host three summer camps designed for young people who will be in the fifth through eighth grades. The S.T.A.R.S camps, which stands for Self discipline, Teamwork, Attitude, Respect and Selfless Service will give participants a positive, meaningful week of exposure to: crime scene investigations, police K9 demonstrations, fire safety, basic first aid by EMS personnel, Internet safety, anti-bullying, goal setting, team building, law enforcement careers and community service projects.

Woman shoots at burglary suspects

A homeowner shot at three burglary suspects after they set off her alarm system, waking her up during the early morning hours of June 1. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) tracked down and arrested the three young men shortly afterward.

KCSO named in wrongful death lawsuit

The family of a man who died in 2011 after being arrested by the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). The suit, filed May 24, alleges that the actions of Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews and his deputies, led to the death of David Lynn Tyler on May 27, 2011.

LFD adopts ‘Adopt-A-Fire Truck’ program

In March, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) launched a new outreach program into the two elementary schools within its fire district in an effort to help educate young children in fire prevention and firefighter identification. The program, titled "Adopt-A-Fire Truck," involves LFD firefighters dressing out in their full firefighting gear to include the air packs as they arrive at the elementary school. Firefighters then enter the school into the library or classroom and read books to the kids. Fire crews then escort the classes out to the fire trucks and share fire prevention tips while showing off the trucks and ...

Two men allegedly stole while victims slept

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested two male suspects, one a juvenile, after they allegedly entered a home in East Camden while the occupants slept and stole an iPhone, car keys and a small quantity of cash. These items had been on the night stand next to where the occupants were sleeping. They subsequently stole a vehicle after leaving the home.
