The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) are concerned about the growing number of alcohol-related traffic deaths in the state and in Kershaw County. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews recently reported that the number of arrests by his deputies for driving under the influence (DUI) were up in 2013 and, with those, DUI fatalities.
The Kershaw County Sheriff's Foundation (KCSF) Board of Directors welcomed four new members to its ten-member board. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is cracking down on sex offenders, specifically those who are failing to register or update the sheriff's office on their whereabouts. The KCSO is responsible for keeping tabs on all registered sex offenders in the county. There are currently 144 active sex offenders in the county, mostly men. As part of the monitoring, each offender is required to report to the KCSO. Depending on their convicted offenses, they may have to report annually, semi-annually or quarterly.

A two-vehicle collision in Camden resulted in minor injuries Monday. A Camden Police Department (CPD) report said a 15-year-old Camden male was northbound on Gordon Street in a 2003 Toyota SUV. He attempted to cross DeKalb Street in front of CPD headquarters and collided with a 4-door 2001 Toyota car driven by a 67-year-old Elgin man. According to the CPD report, the 15-year-old said he did not see the other vehicle. He was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way while entering a roadway.

The SCHP said she lost control of her 2003 Hyundai and hit the wall that divides the westbound and eastbound lanes around mile marker 125.5.
Longtime Camden Police Department (CPD) officer and former Chief Jack Cobb, 75, passed away Sunday. He served the city of Camden from 1975 to 1997, becoming chief in 1993. Cobb's former colleagues remember him as a dedicated policeman, but one who was always ready with a practical joke.
The Camden Police Department (CPD) arrested a Charlotte man Monday after he allegedly tried to carjack a vehicle a KershawHealth parking lot.
