Student brings BB gun to PTHS

A fourth grade Pine Tree Hill Elementary School (PTHS) male student faces disciplinary action after allegedly bringing a small BB gun to the school Thursday. Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Director of Communications Mary Anne Byrd said the incident occurred at dismissal time.

Small explosion reported at Elgin WeylChem plant

A small vessel, or container, "over-pressurized and ruptured," at WeylChem US Inc.'s Elgin plant Friday causing "a very loud noise." Several Elgin residents called the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office after they heard the explosion around 3:45 p.m.

Family describes missing woman, relationship with Grant

Two women close to Adriana Laster hope she is found soon … and have a warning about the man who may be responsible for her disappearance. Her aunt and legal guardian, Dorothy Forston, of Alabama, and Phyllis Horn, the grandmother of Laster's daughter, described the missing woman as a "sweet, little kid" who grew up to be an attentive, if not always present mother. Laster disappeared last September while living with Freddie Grant, 52, who is being held in connection with the disappearance of Columbia teenager Gabrielle "Gabbie" Swainson.

A woman whose Greyhound ran off during a walk has Camden's top cop to thanks for helping reunite her with the dog. Camden Police Chief Joe Floyd helped Barbara Loury find her missing Greyhound this week after it got loose from its collar on East DeKalb Street.

Man sentenced for sexually assaulting daughters

In mid-June, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested 36-year-old Michael Browning for allegedly sexually abusing his own daughters. Browning pled guilty Wednesday and will spend the next 25 years in prison.

Elgin man arrested in connection with kidnapping Richland County teen

Richland County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) deputies charged an Elgin man Tuesday with kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of a 15-year-old Richland County girl. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott identified the man as Freddie Grant, 52, of Kelly Road, in the town of Elgin.

County man charged with criminal sexual conduct, incest

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested a 35-year-old county man for allegedly sexually assaulting his 17-year-old daughter. In order to protect the victim's identity, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is not releasing the suspect's name.

Elgin man named as suspect in Columbia shooting

An Elgin man ended up in the hospital after being shot the morning of Aug. 14 by S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) troopers in Columbia following a chase on I-20 that ended in Columbia's Five Points district.

‘Tie One On’ for MADD

With the 2014 holiday season upon us, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), along with law enforcement and other emergency services are encouraging everyone use a red ribbon to "Tie One On" for safety. Local MADD representatives, emergency personnel and family members of victims of drunk driving gathered Tuesday at Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) for an event to kick off the 28th year of the campaign. Participants urged everyone to act responsibly if they choose to consume alcohol.

During undercover operations Monday, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) cited four businesses for selling tobacco or alcohol to underage buyers. According to a KCSO press release, underage participants under KCSO supervision attempted to make illegal purchases at 23 businesses where tobacco and alcohol are legally sold.
