Kershaw County Board of School Trustees member Joseph "Joey" Dorton, 46, died in a single-vehicle car crash early Wednesday morning. Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers said Dorton died at the scene. Fellers said the accident was discovered by a passerby just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. He said the actual accident likely took place sometime during the 1 a.m. hour.

Kershaw County Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. turned himself in to the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) Wednesday afternoon after learning an arrest warrant had been issued. CCSO deputies then booked Tucker at the Clarendon County Detention Center. A CCSO report listed the charge as "unlawful use or disposal of personal property subject to security interest." A judge later released Tucker on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, according to information taken from VINELink, a website used to track detainees across the country.

In May 2008, Nancy Watts, a constable who works for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), learned she had breast cancer. For many people, a cancer diagnosis is devastating news. It certainly came as a shock to Watts, who is one of the individuals who is tasked with serving civil papers for the KCSO's civil division. Watts' doctor recommended she undergo a mastectomy. Normally, a mastectomy requires the patient be out of work for eight weeks. In Watts' case, she came back after four weeks.
