East Camden man ends up in jail twice in two days

An east Camden man who got out of jail Wednesday on one set of charges ended up back at the Kershaw County Detention Center hours later on another set of charges.

L-EHS grad killed in Calhoun County wreck

A 21-year-old Columbia woman with ties to Kershaw County died in a two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on I-26 in Calhoun County. The S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) and the Calhoun County Coroner's Office confirmed Kristen Amodio Baker, a 2010 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School was westbound on I-26 at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The SCHP said she lost control of her 2003 Hyundai and hit the wall that divides the westbound and eastbound lanes around mile marker 125.5.

Officers, others remember former CPD Chief Jack Cobb

Longtime Camden Police Department (CPD) officer and former Chief Jack Cobb, 75, passed away Sunday. He served the city of Camden from 1975 to 1997, becoming chief in 1993. Cobb's former colleagues remember him as a dedicated policeman, but one who was always ready with a practical joke.

Crime Report - Jan. 22, 2014

The Camden Police Department (CPD) arrested a Charlotte man Monday after he allegedly tried to carjack a vehicle a KershawHealth parking lot. A CPD incident report identified the arrested man as Shaquan Eric White, 21, of Charlotte. It said he arrived at the hospital by ambulance following a one-vehicle crash in Elgin.

Camden man sentenced for shooting at deputies

A circuit court judge sentenced a Camden man to 24 years in prison Thursday after a jury found the defendant guilty of firing shots at Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies in December 2012. Not only is Ernest Maurice Allen, 26, looking at a long incarceration, but his mother, Sabrina Allen, 48, is charged with attempting to influence the key witness in her son's trial.

County crime stats down for 2013

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) has released its crime statistics for 2013 and the good news is most types of incidents were fewer than in 2012. Sheriff Jim Matthews said his deputies' productive year was the result of getting criminals off -- and keeping them off -- the street.

Erica Broughton to be remembered at benefit

To say that Erica Marshall Broughton will be missed by those who knew her is an understatement. According to her family, she was beloved by her friends, family and community members. Broughton, a postal employee, volunteer firefighter and youth leader, died following a single vehicle accident in November near Bethune at the age of 26.

KCSO arrests mother of sexually abused girl

Earlier this week, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested 65-year-old Kenneth Parker on charges he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl on three occasions. Now, the girl's mother is in jail, charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of a child.

LFD adopts a family

Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) personnel were able to grab Santa for a few moments to ride with them one more time this year on a fire truck as crews delivered clothes, presents and lots of food to a Lugoff family adopted by the department for Christmas.

LFD supports highway safety

A crashed car, hearse and a safety banner in front of the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) on U.S. 1 in Lugoff are a way of showing the agency's support for the statewide "Sober or Slammer" highway safety campaign. The car and banner also serve as a reminder to drivers of the dangers of unsafe driving.
