Gag order issued in Miller capital murder case

An order of suppression, commonly called a "gag order" was issued in the capital murder case of Nickolas Jermaine Miller, 25, of Jefferson. The Chronicle-Independent recently learned of the order, which was actually filed several months ago.

LFD adopts a family

Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) personnel were able to grab Santa for a few moments to ride with them one more time this year on a fire truck as crews delivered clothes, presents and lots of food to a Lugoff family adopted by the department for Christmas.

LFD supports highway safety

A crashed car, hearse and a safety banner in front of the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) on U.S. 1 in Lugoff are a way of showing the agency's support for the statewide "Sober or Slammer" highway safety campaign. The car and banner also serve as a reminder to drivers of the dangers of unsafe driving.

Shooting incident leads to drug arrest

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested a Georgia man on drug charges following a shooting incident at a Lugoff hotel. KCSO deputies have not been able to directly tie the man to the shooting.

During its annual Christmas Party on Dec. 7, the Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) named its "Firefighters of the Year" for 2013. This year's recipients are Engineer Eric Champe, Career Firefighter of the Year; Thomas Ray, Volunteer Firefighter of the Year; and Hunter Brazell, Explorer Firefighter of the Year.

New Hampshire couple gives to sheriff’s office, others

As they have for the past five years, Bob and Cheryl Morgan are visiting family in Lugoff for the Christmas holidays from Farmington, N.H. And, as they have for the past five years, the Morgans have brought baked goods and other food to the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) as a token of their appreciation for the deputies, many of whom have to work on Christmas Day.

Matthews receives Thurmond excellence award

Sheriff Jim Matthew became the first Kershaw County law enforcement officer to receive the Strom Thurmond Excellence in Law Enforcement Award. Matthews received the 2013 Thurmond award during a luncheon Tuesday at Fort Jackson. There are four Thurmond excellence awards, one each for municipal, county, state and federal law officers. Matthews received the county-level award.
