CMS is ‘safe and positive place for our students’

Two members of the school improvement council (SIC) at Camden Middle School (CMS) say they are satisfied with the way school administrators handled an incident Tuesday morning involving a 13-year-old student bringing a gun and box cutter on campus. Camden's police chief also praised administrators, saying their choices made it possible for the Camden Police Department (CPD) to complete its investigation.

With help from its bloodhound tracking team, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested two east Camden teenagers on burglary charges Monday. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said both boys are 16 years old.

Woman burned in Lugoff house fire

A Lugoff woman is back in the area with relatives following treatment at the Augusta Burn Center for injuries suffered in a Nov. 23 house fire. The woman suffered burns to both hands. Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) firefighters treated the woman at the scene before EMS transported her to Palmetto Richland in Columbia and then on to Augusta.

Camden man charged with molesting 9-year-old

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies charged a Camden man Tuesday with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after turning himself in over accusations he inappropriately touched a 9-year-old girl. In a statement released Wednesday, the KCSO identified the man as Christopher D. Yates, of Lakeshore Drive, Camden. Deputies interviewed him with his attorney present before charging him.

Barn Fire

The Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) battles a barn fire Nov. 12 on Guion Drive off Lachicotte Road in Lugoff. A cold front entering the area brought wind gusts of more than 30 mph to the area, threatening to drive the flames against a nearby residence. LFD Battalion 1, Rescue 10 and Engine 10 arrived on the scene to find the large barn heavily involved in fire. The fire also spread to the yard and woods surrounding the home and threatened a neighbor's detached car garage.
