The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested for the second time an 18-year-old man for transporting contraband bound for a South Carolina prison. Deputies arrested Jonathan Hugo Gonzalez, 18, of Woodruff, around 8 p.m. Dec. 23 after spotting him traveling at nearly 90 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-20 westbound near the 105 mile marker.

Six taken to hospital in 3-vehicle accident

Ambulance crews took six people to KershawHealth to be treated for injuries sustained in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of West DeKalb and Campbell streets in Camden around 2 p.m. Friday. The Camden Fire Department (CFD) assisted emergency services personnel in stabilizing three of those victims before transport.

SCHP amps up efforts for New Year's weekend

Beware the "BATmobile" this New Year's Eve if you plan to drink and drive during the holiday weekend. Equipped with a DataMaster breath analyzer, the BATmobile, also known as the Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit, is a 26-foot-long customized vehicle used by the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) to help crack down on DUI accidents and fatalities in the state.

Sheriff: Brutal murder a 'death penalty case'

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said he has asked the 5th Circuit Solicitor's Office to seek the death penalty against 23-year-old Nickolas Jermaine Miller of Jefferson. Kershaw County and Chesterfield County deputies arrested Miller Monday after he confessed to abducting and raping Beverly Hope Melton, 30, of Kershaw and then beating her to death with a baseball bat.

Over the limit

On a Thursday in November, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Deputy Jacob Hammond served as part babysitter, part bartender pouring glasses of beer, vodka and bourbon for KCSO volunteers. Despite looking at times like an after-hours office party, Hammond actually took part in a new sobriety training program for road deputies.

Abducted woman killed in county

A 23-year-old Chesterfield County man is in jail, charged with abducting, raping and killing a 30-year-old Lancaster County woman in Kershaw County.

Three arrested for breaking into landfill

In what appears to have been an attempt to go joyriding in an old Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) truck, deputies arrested a 48-year-old Cassatt man and two men in their 20s Tuesday night. Deputies responded to a witness' call that the three men were trying to steal the vehicle from inside the Kershaw County landfill compound on Park Road.

Looks worse than it is...

No one was hurt in this two-car traffic accident that occurred around 3:30 p.m. Thursday on South Broad Street (U.S. 521) near Historic Camden. Lt. Mike Stone of the Camden Police Department said the accident occurred after one driver attempted to make a left turn onto Ehrenclou Drive and struck another vehicle. The car was traveling north on Highway 521 and made the turn in front of oncoming traffic heading south. Bond denied again for man accused of shooting into occupied home

A Camden man will remain in the Kershaw County Detention Center after being denied bond for a July 14 incident in which he is alleged to have fired several shots into an ex-girlfriend's home and forced his way inside. Harley Joe Moore, 33, faces a list of charges for that event and another that occurred a month earlier on June 13.

County man killed in two-car collision

A 23-year-old county man died in a two-car collision in the Cassatt area shortly after noon Saturday when he failed to stop for a stop sign and collided with another vehicle.
