Step up security measures during upcoming holidays

It seems that during the Christmas and Thanksgiving season property crimes increase. Maybe it's because thieves realize that people are shopping for Christmas gifts that will be kept in homes. We have also seen a recent rise in housebreakings, mostly in the rural areas. As is often the case, thieves steal guns, TVs, stereos, computers, tools, etc.

House fire claims life of county man Monday

A Kershaw County man, Woodrow Jenkins, 80, died Monday in a fire at his home on Goodwin-Jenkins Lane, located off of Black River Road south of Seegars Mill Road.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is investigating a claim that two Cassatt women kidnapped a juvenile male and forced him to take money from an ATM in Camden. According to a KCSO report, the boy said the women threatened to kill him and his family if he didn't comply.

KCSO arrests man for faking own kidnapping

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested a 30-year-old man early Friday morning on extortion charges after faking his kidnapping Thursday. Sheriff Jim Matthews said Christopher List Hutto, 30, of Upper Pond Road, Elgin, faked the kidnapping in order to extort money from his mother in order to buy crack cocaine.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a 22-year-old Greenville man on a motorcycle following a chase Friday where speeds got up to 131 mph hour on I-20. Sheriff Jim Matthews identified the man as Joshua Damian Boyter, 22, of Cherokee Drive in Greenville.

Victims identified in murder-suicide

A note and a 911 call led to the grisly discovery of an apparent murder-suicide in Camden at a home on Wateree Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers positively identified the victims as Nancy Patricia Stone, 47, and her estranged husband, Reginald E. Stone, 44.

Drug dealer pleads guilty

Warren Edward Washington, 29, of Cassatt, skipped out on his Oct. 17 trial date for crack cocaine distribution and marijuana possession charges. Less than 24 hours later, an anonymous tip led Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies to a home on Clearwater Lake Road near Westville where they found Washington and arrested him.

Man bonds out on DUI, child endangerment charges

A Darlington man is out of jail on $2,712 bond – which included $445 for a child endangerment charge -- after being arrested Saturday when he was found passed out in his car on Interstate 20 with his 5-year-old daughter in the car.

Man allegedly shoots at, breaks into ex-girlfriend’s home

Responding to a frantic 911 call for help and a follow up investigation, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Harley Joe Moore, 33, of Camden, and charged him with first degree burglary, discharging a firearm into a dwelling, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
