The Camden Police Department (CPD) recognized three city crossing guards for their dedication and service during S.C. Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, which ended Friday. The CPD, along with the S.C. Department of Transportation's (SCDOT) Safe Routes to School Resource Center honored William Lucas and John T. Arledge for their service at Camden Elementary School (CES) and Carson Gordon for keeping students safe at Camden Middle School (CMS).

With the 2014 holiday season upon us, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), along with law enforcement and other emergency services are encouraging everyone use a red ribbon to "Tie One On" for safety. Local MADD representatives, emergency personnel and family members of victims of drunk driving gathered Tuesday at Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) for an event to kick off the 28th year of the campaign. Participants urged everyone to act responsibly if they choose to consume alcohol.

During undercover operations Monday, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) cited four businesses for selling tobacco or alcohol to underage buyers. According to a KCSO press release, underage participants under KCSO supervision attempted to make illegal purchases at 23 businesses where tobacco and alcohol are legally sold.

Support for an arson victim who lost essentially all she owned continues to pour in from residents of the West Wateree area and other sections of Kershaw County. What authorities said was an intentionally set fire destroyed the home of Pearl Brown, 76 on Nov. 4. Investigators said the crime appeared to be an act of attempted revenge targeting the wrong house.

Lugoff community members have launched a fundraising effort to help a Lugoff woman whose home was destroyed recently by what authorities have determined was an act of arson. Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Chief Dennis Ray said the Nov. 4 blaze was the first of two intentionally set fires in Lugoff that night, believed to the be the work of the same person.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) and S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) have joined forces to investigate two suspicious fires in Lugoff that have been determined to be arsons. The KCSO sought a "person of interest" thought to have information about the two fires. Thursday afternoon, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said that person had contacted law enforcement. Matthews said an interview was scheduled for 2:30 p.m.Thursday at the KCSO in Lugoff.
