Mahoney to plead guilty in N.H. June 8

Clarence Mahoney, 70, the former chairman of the Camden Historic Landmarks Commission (CHLC), will plead guilty June 8 to sexual assault of a minor in Rockingham County, N.H. Mahoney could spend between seven and a half to 15 years in prison.

Law Enforcement Report - March 7, 2012

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a registered sex offender for allegedly molesting a juvenile girl two to three years ago. A KCSO report identified the man as 25-year-old Phillip Patterson of Jones Road, Kershaw.

Magistrate says Magic Machines illegal

Around 11 a.m. Jan. 26, Sgt. Jamey Jones, an investigator with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), walked into the C&M Market on U.S. 1 South near Elgin. Working undercover, he sat down at one of two video machines marked "Magic Minutes," fed a marked $20 bill into the machine "and numerous card games came up," he wrote in a report.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies received reports involving an 18-year-old Camden man four times in three days. In the first report, the man called his 17-year-old girlfriend -- with whom he has a 14-month-old child -- and asked her for money. When she refused, he allegedly threatened to break her neck and texted and called her continuously for the next two hours making similar threats. Bethune police chief steps down after cancer diagnosis

Lugoff bank robbed

A man who robbed First Palmetto Savings Bank's Lugoff branch at gunpoint around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday remained at large Thursday afternoon. According to the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), the man walked into the bank, pulled out a silver pistol and demanded the teller give him all her loose bills. KCSO Chief Deputy Marvin Brown described the suspect as a "white male, tall, slender with a grubby beard wearing a white shirt and blue jeans" and is believed to be 25 to 30 years old. Law Enforcement Report - Feb. 22, 2012

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested two men whom Sheriff Jim Matthews described as "career criminals" following a car chase Feb. 13 where the suspects ran other drivers off the road. Matthews identified the men as Marcus Antwon Greene, 24, of Lyttleton Street, Camden, and Jermaine Davon Mickle, 26, of York Street, Camden. Both men, he said, have extensive criminal records.

KCSO supports cancer research, constable

In May 2008, Nancy Watts, a constable who works for the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), learned she had breast cancer. For many people, a cancer diagnosis is devastating news. It certainly came as a shock to Watts, who is one of the individuals who is tasked with serving civil papers for the KCSO's civil division. Watts' doctor recommended she undergo a mastectomy. Normally, a mastectomy requires the patient be out of work for eight weeks. In Watts' case, she came back after four weeks.

Matthews to equip KCSO deputies with body cameras

Shortly after taking office in 2011, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews began looking into equipping his officers with body cameras. As time passed his interest took on a more serious nature and in April 2014, he directed one of his staff to begin the process of evaluating different systems.
