Evans pleads guilty pair of 2011 murders

A Lancaster County man arrested more than two and a half years ago for allegedly murdering his estranged wife and his male roommate in Kershaw County pleaded guilty to those charges on Oct. 31.

Five arrested following Nov. 4 Verizon break-in

Five people, including two 16-year-old male juveniles are charged in connection with a break-in at the Verizon store on West DeKalb Street in Camden. The arrests, detailed in a Camden Police Department (CPD) press release issued Tuesday afternoon, took place Monday, Nov. 4. The CPD issued the press release following further investigation that led to additional charges in other jurisdictions.

An unknown assailant shot a Camden man at a Chestnut Street home just before 7 p.m. Friday. EMS later transported the victim to KershawHealth; he was then flown to a Columbia-area hospital.

Cassatt mail carrier, firefighter dies in vehicle accident

A Cassatt mail carrier and volunteer firefighter died Wednesday morning after she ran off the road and into a concrete statue. Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers identified the victim as Erica Broughton, 26, of Cassatt.

Motel manager, residents arrested on drug charges

The manager of a Camden motel is among six people the Camden Police Department (CPD) served warrants for drug distribution. The manager and five others are all residents of the Mona Lisa Motel on West DeKalb Street, according to Chief Joe Floyd. According to CPD reports, officers served motel manager Felicia Renee Johnson, 34, who also lives at the motel, with three warrants for drug distribution in proximity of a school. Officers served the other five residents with warrants for drug distribution.

Ernst pleads guilty to CDV

Former Elgin Town Councilman Norman "Bubba" Ernst pled guilty in early October to two counts of criminal domestic violence (CDV) charges filed against him in March of this year. The Chronicle-Independent learned of the plea earlier this week.

Accident with injury

Camden police officers and firefighters, and EMS respond to an accident at Broad and DeKalb streets just before noon Monday. According to the Camden Police Department (CPD), an Elgin man driving a 2006 Toyota truck (right) ran a red light while traveling east on DeKalb Street, causing him to hit a 2003 Dodge (left) traveling South on Broad Street. The truck then struck First Palmetto Bank's Karesh building on the southwest corner. CPD Chief Joe Floyd said the driver of the Dodge was taken to the hospital with no life-threatening injuries.
